Mauser 98 ?
Can someone tell me distinctive features of a Muaser 98 action, so I can Them (98) apart from all the other Mauser variations. THANKS

The most distinctive thing is the 3d safety lug at the rear of the bolt. They also have a gas deflection shield on the right side of the bolt, which some earlier ones do not. They also have oval shaped gas escape holes on the right side of the bolt under this shield. The reciever ring on some is larger than on earlier actions. Generally they cock most of the way on opening.

At a glance, the easy way is to look at the safety lever. Be it 98k German, '09 Argi, 16/33 Iranian, whatever configuration, the 98 safety is like no other. 0 -
Is the 98 different from the 96? 0 -
Yes. They are different. The 96 action (very similar to the 93 action as well) only has the 2 locking lugs at the front of the bolt and no 3d lug, though the bolt handle serves this function I suppose. The gas deflection system is not as ample, consisting of a small hole or two, not the generous ovals described above. The 96 cocks fully on closing and is of longer stroke (so I think). Not as strong as the 98 either but suitable for mid strength cartridges, esp. the 6.5X55. There are other differences too, and as mentioned above, the safety, though similar in operation, is a bit different in appearence on the rifle. Only Sweden used the 96 action to any extent.

Thanks for the info. I'm not sure what is meant by the 3d lug at the rear of the bolt. Is there any web site were I can see a picture of this.

Hello Glenn.
Take the bolt out of the piece and look at the bottom of it. If you see a rectangular, approximately 7/16 x 5/16, protrusion forward of the bolt handle you're looking at the safety lug. Also, the m98 bolt has a longitudinal guide rib on the right side of the bolt that the 93/95/96's don't have. The 95 Chilean Mauser has a recess that the bolt handle turns into when its in the firing position, but I believe none of the others of the 93/95/96 series has that feature.
