old remington 721 30-06

My dad recently gave me an old remington 721 30-06. I'm guessing its 25+ years old. The wood stock has been broken and re-glued , I was wondering if anyone could tell me what my options are for a replacement stock. Also I would like any info on its acuracy and what would be a good choice for a scope. It has has a generic 3x9x32 scope and a muzzle brake. I'm guessing it has better acuracy than my chinese sks. Would a newer 700 fiber stock fit? Any input, comments or links on this gun would be appreciated because I'm in the dark here.

    correction :30-06 sprg. I think that means springfield?

    the model 721, 722, and 725 were the precursers to the model 700, and are virtualy identical. many stocks will/can be made to fit that are offered for the 700. i would check out catologs and call them to ask about specific stocks. wood would be an easier fit for a gunsmith, as it is easier to alter and fit.the m-721 is a tack driver. it is capable of better than minute of angle groups out to 300 yds. these guns are often overlooked, as the 700 comes in more flavors, and variations. julian hatcher(hatchers nootbook, hatchers book of the garand) called it the safest stongest bolt action rifle ever made. these are not expensive guns, but are perfect platforms to build your ultimate rifle. whether a tactical gun, a custom stocked hunting piece, or a benchrest target gun, the 721 excells. hopefully you have the 24" barrel, as it is the best for accuracy. you should upgrade your scope(go bigger) and have a stock fitted by a gunsmith after consulting with a catolog/retailer (try midway). happy shooting, good luck, and best regards. mike.

    Chezick....you're a lucky guy. You have an excellent rifle in an excellent caliber...far more powerful and accurate than your SKS.

    Mike's advice is right on the ball. Restock it and you'll have a rifle that's just about as good as they get.

    Wow. Looks like I'm on to something real good here. It does have the 24" barrel. Thanks a great deal for the info all you guys, I would have never known. I was hoping some experienced guys could point me in the right direction. It looks like my options are many and worth pursuing.

    The Remington 700 was introduced in 1962, if memory is correct, so your 721 is a lot older than 25 years. My Dad had one in 30-06 also and I took it to college with me. Shot lots of jackrabbits, prairie dogs and coyotes with the 110 gr. Sierra HP and a case full of surplus 4831. Any stock off a standard long action 700 Remington will fit. You will need to open up the barrel channel and inlet for the rear sight bulge. Other than that it should fit. I would recommend glass bedding the action also. Good Luck, you have a fine old gun.
