Colt Generations

The pistols are not themselves MARKED first, second, or third. You can tell by the serial numbers. First generation Colts were made from 1873 through 1940 and have numbers only. Second generation pistols were made from 1956 through 1976 with SA after the serial number. Most collectors divide second gereration into three sub catagories:
early, mid-range, and late. Third generation pistol production began in 1976 and the SA was before the serial number. Examples: Serial number 12345...first generation. 12345SA...second. SA12345...third.
I know that Judge Colt is out there this morning so I'm cautious about telling you more details. There are some REAL experts in this forum and this is a very brief look at a VERY complex subject.

I just bought a Colt SAA the serial no. is marked S12345A, does this mean its a different production run from 3rd gen. When looking around to buy one, one guy called them a 3rd/4th gen, are these the same as what we call 3rd gen.
