The pockets on the bipod case were originaly for carrying cleaning equipment. The use of a bipod on the AR-15/M16 rifles are as old as the rifles themselves. One of the first 300 Armalite AR-15's made in
December 1959 is pictured with a bipod in place. The adoption of the butt stock trap for cleaning equipment was not made until 1968 so other than carrying the cleaning gear in your uniform pockets, the case was the only game in town. Of course not everyone was issued a bipod and even the few who were prefered not to lug the thing around in the bonnies. The result? No cleaning equipment with the rifle and all of the famous Viet Nam M16 horror stories we know so well. Of course this is all over simplified but you get the idea.
