I don't see how you can go wrong with the 40 S&W caliber. It has proven to be quite accurate and is proven more than adequate for defense. I have a CHL and I usually carry my pistols that are in this caliber so I may be prejudiced but I feel most members here will tell you the same thing. One word of advice, buy a pistol that you can change the barrels to shoot the Sig 357 caliber, a bit more powerful than the 40 and if possible a barrel to shoot 9mm. The 40 caliber is not exactly cheap, and the Sig 357 is even more expensive. The 9mm is very cost effective and may give you more opportunities for practicing. Usually these extra barrels cost $100-130 each but in effect gives you 3 pistols so not a bad deal at all.

The 40 is a very good caliber and the beretta is an excellent choice for this caliber. The only other caliber i would choose for personal carry is .45 .

i just bought a taurus pt101 .40cal(similair to the beretta 96f) with a 357 sig barrel and it is a great weapon, i have been shooting the .40cal for a while, and it is an awesome load. i wanted the stopping power of a 45, but the fps of a 9mm, eventualy i decided on the .40. it is very accurate, and powerful. with the .40 you have a wide variety of ammo to choose from, as with the 9mm. unfortunatly, with the 357 it is a different story, it is a nice load, but variety of ammo is not much. the beretta is a great choice, if you decide you want the look, and feel (like i did)without the price, the taurus is the way to go.

I like the .40 caliber. It is plenty powerful enough and plenty accurate enough. It fits in a 9mm platform and handles double-stack magazines in a compact package.

It is everything the .41 Action Express would have become, had the .40 Smith & Wesson not come along when it did.

.40acp is a GREAT round. I personally shoot .45, as I like the big wallop. From what research I've done, the .40 is very similar to the larger .45, trading flatter trajectory for slightly reduced impact. 9mm, .40 and .45 are all lethal rounds, providing you use good loads. Personally I like Corbon for self-defence.

Here are some pistol caliber generalizations...
    9mm:
Pro: Fast round, flat trajectory, relatively inexpensive.
Con: Slightly limited knockdown, supersonic rounds can cause more ear damage.

    .40:
Pro: Fast, flat trajectory, good knockdown.
Con: As expensive as .45 ammo.

    .45:
Pro: Great knockdown, not much more recoil as .40 or 9mm.
Con: More drop at longer ranges, somewhat expensive, limited ammo capacity for .45 caliber sub-compact pistols.

    .357 Sig:
Pro: Everthing good about the .40, with even more energy.
Con: More expensive, same recoil as .45, supersonic=loud, possible over-penetration though walls (depending on type of round).

p.s. Caliber is not as important a factor as: 1)Your comfort level with the gun, 2)The load you use.

I like the 40s+w. It is accurate and powerful. I have a Glock 22 and it shoots as good as my Kimber.

When Clinton left office they gave him a 21 gun salute. Its a damn shame they all missed....

The 40 S&W balances between 9mm and the .45ACP. It's a good combat caliber for the one gun owner, but I see more than a few 40 S&W people move up to the .45.

The 40 is a good compromise between 9mm and 45acp in a 9mm size gun. Makes it a perfect ccw.

The Beretta 96 is a good platform to begin with. I myself have a 92fs and after wanting a 40sw, I bought a slide assembly in ebay for a 96d. The difference in recoil is quite noticeable when compared to a 92fs but then again, this goes for almost every other pistol. Simply put, the 40sw is the halfway point between a 9mm and a 45acp.
