With the price of primers going through the roof,I find myself with lots of large rifle magnum primers and few regular.Should I reduce loads for my 06, 270 and 6.5x55 and use the mags up or load them as usual? I do use them in extreme cold during our winter season in standard loads. thanks dave

MAG PRIMERS DO HAVE THERE USES, SOME POWDERS & LOAD COMBO'S, THAY ARE RECOMMENDED. YOUR POWDERS, THE LOADING MANUALS DON'T CALL FOR THEM. BEST TO USE MAG OR STANDARD AS RECOMMENDED BY YOUR LOADING MANUAL.

in a pistol the only time when i have found them to be important is when using win 296 or h110 which are typically hard to ingnite. in other uses they will raise pressures and decrease accuracy.

follow they load data to a T

I never paid any real notice to the specific primer mentioned in the load listings save for the size. However I just came across an article of 357 loads where the use of magnum primers was explicitly stated. None of the powders matched mine.

Sounds more like one should use it only if needed because of the higher pressure potential.

I found that standard or benchrest primers work just fine, I used to think I needed the magnum primers for magnum loads, But found that is not really true. Standard or benchrest will be just fine.

There is a threshhold published somewhere on the recommended use of mag primers, but I don't remember where I saw it. It was a chart much like a windchill matrix, but with the powder burning speed and grains of powder replacing temp and wind speed, Anyone else seen this?
