I'd really recommend you let a gunsmith do this for you. He can set up (sight) your scope as well. The cost is really chump change.

    What you're looking for is a #31 drill and a 6x48 tap.

I don't think Sears will carry the proper tap (6-48 tap #31 drill), unless you are a experienced machinist, I would follow the advise given, as there is more to it than just drilling and tapping a couple holes.
The last one I had done cost me $30 or $35, not hardly worth the aggravation of doing it yourself.
If you are confident you can do it, Wholesale Tool has a 6-48 tap set (T,P,&B) for $12.95 it is not on the web site http://www.wttool.com but you can order it over the phone 1-800-521-3420

    Hello

Just wanted to say, that you ought to get a gunsmith to take a look at it.

Many people using taps below 2mm or 1.5mm, break the taps due to improper alligning.
But that's not what I'm worried about though.

If you're going to be doing the drilling and tapping yourself, how do you plan on alligning the holes on the weapon?
Have in mind, that a slight mis-allignment will set off your Zero in the scope by inches at best - several feet at worst at longer distances.

Get a gunsmith to do it, he/she won't break the tap or drill wrong (usually) - or leave your rifle like a bad piece of cheese, full of useless holes.

I know in Denmark, it doesn't cost more than 20-30US$ to get it done correctly. At least at the two places I know of.
The proper drill and the correct tap and the thread-cutting grease - will probably set you back around the same amount anyways.
Because taps usually comes in sets of three, and for small holes or threads, you will need all three.
Unless you plan to drill all the way through.

Listen to the other guys, a gunsmith generaly charges $4.00 per hol to drill and tap a rifle, you will need 4 holes for a 2 piece base and 3 holes for a one piece base. Be sure to take you scope base or bases with you to the gunsmith. There is a difference in the hole patteren of different manufactures for mauser rifles. If you are determien to do it your self you can get a drilling and tap jig from Midway or Brownells. You may have to order the tap and drills seperat. Get a #31 drill and a 6x48 tap. this should run you around $50.00- $60.00. If this is a one time thing don't waist you money on the jig, let a gunsmith do it and save your self a lot of troubble.

Thanks for the advise after your suggestions I will take it to my local gunsmith. He is going to charge me 25$ for drilling and taping and like you said misaligning the scope could be a problem. Although I have the receiver aligning tool or whatever it is called (which gets screwed on to receiver bottom and aligns the holes directly on top) I do not want to experiment and waist perfectly good receiver because of 25$+my carelessness
    Thanks again for advise

Right decision! Some of the Mauser recievers are heat treated as hard as, well very hard. Easy to have the drill walk or break the tap. Good luck.
