Questions on 1965 model 70 Winchester...???
I thought I'd repost in detail. I inherited a Model 70 Winchester in the 30-06 caliber. Serial # is 808281, and supposedly a 1965 model.Barrel length is 21 1/8 "long. The blueing is basically all their except for the "sharp" edges. Bolt finish is the "shiny jewedled look" if you will. Mainly worn off on the right side where the friction occurs. Most knicks and scratches are on the trigger guard and magazine drop. This gun came on a bell and carlson stock and I left it on and topped it with a 6x burris with leupold mounts. Their is no rust anywhere whatsoever. If this indeed is a '65 model, It looks good for its age. But its definately been hunting before. I know nothing about model 70's so would appreciate any comments about this gun and approximate value, (not counting my scope/mounts.) Thanks again, just thought I'd be a little more specific.

1964 was the first year the action was changed on the model 70's. That is why you see "pre-64" prominatly posted on older guns. The revised action was widely believe to be inferior to the pre-64 actions (and in fact it was) and sales plummeted to the extent that you could hardly give one away in some parts of the country. To this day that remains true in many areas. In 1994 U.S. Repeating Arms changed the action once again, returning it to the "pre-64" style in an attempt to recapture some of that market. Can't give you a good idea on price for this one, but it is not a collector rifle, it is a shooter, so perhaps somewhere in the $350 area. It should make a decent back-up rifle.
