I hav a S&W Model 28 Highway Patrolman .357 mag it has NYSP stamped on the barrel and is about 95% condition. My question is the fireing pin is on the Hammer should it be carried with the hammer on an empty chamber?I dont plan on carrying or useing the gun,but I was wondering about Revolvers with the fireing pin attached to the hammer as to how their supposed to be carried?
Thanks in Advance!

There are many modern revolvers with the firing pin on the hammer that are safe to carry with a round under the firing pin; the S&W M28 is one of them. The trigger must be fully to the rear in order for the firing pin to contact the round under the hammer.
Incidentally, I own a S&W M681 that is stamped NYSP.

Actually, Dr. Pig has it backwards. The safety block (not a transfer piece) that serves to keep the firing pin from being able to contact the primer on a Smith & Wesson slides OUT of the way when the trigger is pulled to the rear, thus allowing the hammer to go forward far enough to allow the firing pin to strike the primer. Perhaps Dr. Pig is confusing a transfer bar ignition with the safety hammer block system used by Smith & Wesson (beginning in 1944) and Colt (called the Positive Lock, beginning in approximately 1905). (The Colt J-frame has a transfer bar ignition.)
Any revolver with a hammer block or transfer bar ignition is safe to carry with a live round under the lowered hammer, unlike Old Model Rugers, Colt SAAs, etc..0 -
Thank you Judge and DR.SP I kept looking for something that looked like a transfer bar safety.I now understand how it works, thanks again.
