Bama55 (reply) model 12 winchester
howdy, I saw your reply, thanks. I'll start over. Model 12 winchester 20 gauge, the tubular magazine is longer than normal. (is this rare?) serial# is :295501 and is also stamped on tubular magazine. The choke is full. Barrel length is 23 3/4 inches from end to reciever. Their is no Ventilated rib.Barrel is stamped Nickel Steel. Their is no recoil pad, just the Butt plate that says "winchester repeating arms Co" The wood looks to be high quality, with not any visible "knot holes", the the finish is dark. The first impression of this shotgun is ..It looks like an antique. But, Like I said before its mechanicaly sound, and a nice shotgun. Oh, I have shot 2 3/4 inch shell through it so I hope I didn't hurt it. The barrel "looks" like the original. The last patent date on the barrel is July 22, 1913. Thats about all I can tell you, thanks again !!!

on a model 12 the proper way to measure the barrel length is to measure down the inside of the barrel with the chamber closed. You barrel is most likely 25 inches. The only way to check the chamber length is to measure it with a chamber gauge. If you dont have one most gunshops do. A lot of the older model 12s have already had there chambers lengthened. If your gun is still short chambered it actualy adds to the guns collector value while at the same time reducing its shootability, although short shells are still available they sell for a premium price. The magazine tube should hold 5 shells; 2 if it has a duck plug in it. Do you have the tube pushed into the receiver and turned to lock it?? It sounds like your gun is a standard field grade gun and worth in the 325-375 range. They are very nice guns. Take care of it..... 0 -
Redches,
It is a 1922, standard model 12. I have not found any info. on
the longer mag. tube, so I don't know. As for value, I would say
probably $350-375. I would have a gunsmith check the chamber length before shooting 2 3/4 in. shells
again. A good gunsmith could ream the chamber to 2 3/4 in. without
much trouble. Hope this helps.
As for the shells you shot, it probably didn't damage
anything. I had a cousin that shot 3 in. mag. buckshot in his
fathers ancient 12 ga. PARKER, 2 3/4 in. chambers, double barrel on many deer hunts. He was lucky I guess. Though I would not recommend it for anyone.
