M1 Carbine info
I came across an M1 Carbine. It has a number pressed in the stock, peep sights and IBM markings on the barrel. I did find what I think is an import mark on the receiver that says SACCO. The asking price on the gun is $350, is that out of line? I would say the gun is in fair condtion with dinged dk brown wood, and fair metal condition. The reciever is a Postal Meter.
I am also going to bring up an old topic about the recent sale of M1 Carbines to LEO's. The person that has this gun is a LEO, and I have a feeling he might have purchased this gun through LEO deal. It is not marked LEO. Can he sell it? Can I buy it?

You are correct that it is an import. Many of them contain a mixture of well-used parts and may have been refinished. I would expect it to sell in the $200-250 range; I would also expect to have problems with it.
M1 carbines were given to police depts by the federal govt for many years. NONE of these were imports or had import markings. Some depts marked them with ID, but none would have been marked "LEO only" or would have any other restrictions (except for the M2 versions). Most have been sold by the depts to officers, individuals, dealers, & wholesalers.

99.9% of all carbines made were, at one time or another, arsenal refurbished. Sounds like a good shooter to me. Have a look at www.jouster.com and battlerifles.com. Both have Carbine forums and you can get a much better idea of its value at either. Mind you, from what I've gathered $350 is about right for a shooter. I'm vague, I know. Up here in Canada they're restricted just like a handgun and aren't as valuable or common place any more. Pity. I love shooting mine. 0 -
I bought an M-1 Carbine years ago with a letter from my chief. The letter stated the gun may be used for duty purposes, and was not for resale. I still have it, but there was no follow-up to check to see if I had sold it. The one you are looking at would be ok for you to buy, and ok for the ofcr to sell as the only thing he would be violating is dept policy. You would be violating nothing.
The price you mentioned is about right for a shooter/ parts gun. I have seen non-import carbines in excellent condition going for as much as $800.00 in recent months.

I remember years ago when Sears was selling them in their catalogs for $99.00, mail order. 0
