Shotgun Heatshield
Is it just me, or are these things pretty much worthless? I always wanted one for my shotgun, but it had ventilated ribs, so I couldn't. My friend has an old Mossberg with a heatshield, and when we take it shooting it heats up as much, if not more, than my Remington. Why bother? Is it just for looks?

Hello
I believe they are only made, to keep arms legs and fingers from touching a hot barrel.
Besides that - they look "nasty" on a shotgun =o)
The versions I've seen, weren't supposed to conduct heat away from the barrel - they just made a small space between the barrel and the heatshield itself.
So in that version - they would just keep accidental touch from happening and actually hinder a natural airflow around the barrel, then the barrel might get slightly hotter.
The heatshield won't get the same temp as the barrel, because of airs heatconductivity is low and there's not much metallic contact between shield and barrel.
I had a Mossberg 835 once too, it had ventilated ribs too - but I thought I'd buy a slug-barrel and a heatshield. Just for fun.
Never happened, a friend bought the gun from me - for around 50US$ more than I originally bought it for.
=o)

Just owns a silenced .22LR Anshutz rifle =o) .308Win Steyr Mannlicher - Scout ;o_ That's all I need, but not all I want.
Don't do anything I've allready done - It's just plain stoooopid. =o)0 -
The Heat Shield on a shotgun is more for cosmetic reasons than any other. But they will cool the Barrel down much quicker,in rapid fire. But most shotguns arent used for rapid fire.
Best!!!
