I'm not sure of what the 1991 compact is. The wholesale price for a Python is 900.00 plus. Colt defender, would be about 700.00 new. Just some numbers to start with. Not sure if the Defender is what you are refering to.

Colt offered the 1991A1 in Gov't, Commander and Officers sizes. You can get new 1991A1s for around $550. I'm not sure what the price differences between the sizes are but I expect they'd be around this amount. The 1991A1 is a run of the mill piece, nothing special.

The Python's value depends on condition, finish, age, barrel length, etc. Usually, I've seen good condition Pythons go for $500+, but like I mentioned, there are a lot of factors to consider. Pythons are top of the line revolvers.

Depending what you want to use the gun for, and the condition of the Python, I think you're trading up in this scenario.

    Just my opinion.

so you guys would trade a NEW Colt 1991 A1 (compact model) that is stainless steel in box and with papers for a USED Colt Python that is stainless steel with torn box and no papers.

i am collector and want the most valuable and collectible piece. i have never seen another 1991 compact and was wondering what price it can bring and its collectibility and what price a used Python will bring and collectibility.

thanks for all the help this is a great forum

Run a search for both guns on GunBroker and compare prices. The Python will probably win out.

The 1991A1 Compact is not an unusual or rare firearm. I own one currently and have three friends who each own one. The Python is a great revolver. You need to decide which one will serve your needs best. I would make the trade if the Python is in VG to Excellent condition. JMHO

    ZEUS,
JOHN HAS NO IDEA WHAT HE REALLY IS SAYING BUT....
THE PYTHON IS ONE FINE WHEEL GUN AND WORTH MORE THAN ANY
1991 SERIES COLT. PUNCHIE CALLED THIS. THE 1991 SERIES HAS
VERY CLOSE TO ZERO COLLECTABLE STATUS. TRULY YOUR CALL.

It really depends on the gun....The best example I can give you are two Pythons I have been in contact with recently. I own one that is a shooter. I am sure I could list it here and get 5-600.00 easy. A cop buddy of mine was in the process of putting in for retirement and put his New in the box 4" Python up for sale. He sold it for 1300.00
Both guns were made the same year and were same finish etc. Actually I think he could have done a little better.

Hope this helps. But again it really depends on the the Gun...

You may have a brand new Yugo, but I'd still trade it for a nice used
    Mercedes.
