Bullet Shape for Tube Mag
Guys,
I recently bought my first 2 rifles with tube mags. One is a Taurus 22mag pump and the other a 100th anniversery Marlin 336 30-30 lever. I know that bullet nose shape matters in these guns. What do I buy?
Thanks,

What you DON'T want is anyting with a sharp, hard point that could act as a stand-in firing pin. The 22mag is pretty safe (being rimfire) with whatever your preference is in this cartridge; the 30-30 (centerfire) should only use flat-point bullets. Ask at your local gun shop if you have any doubts.

what is your impression of that tauras ? did you shoot it yet ? i'm looking to pick up a 22 mag , don't know which one yet . i was leaning towards a lever action though as i have two pump .22 lr's already . wrench . 0 -
spclark, Thanks for the reply. I thought I was pretty safe with the pump but wanted to ask. Looking more closely at the JG ad in SN, I see they have listed Federal 30-30 flat nose. That's what I'll get.

hdw, I haven't shot the Taurus yet. I did put my laser bore sight on it and adjusted the sights. Hope to shoot next weekend. I'll let you know what I think.

I saw some very interesting pictures in one of Elmer Keith's books. He was experimenting with a wildcat known as the .450 Alaskan, built on a 1886 Winchester. The loads were HEAVY, of course, and some of the bullets must have been a bit TOO pointy. Several rounds in the magazine detonated at once and blew the front end of the rifle all to flinders.
Round nose and flat point only.

I don't think you will find a "off the shelf" box of 30-30 with
a pointed bullet.

Thank you
