Choice of two calibers same rifle
My Uncle is giving me a Rem 700 ADL in either 270 or 3006. These are already purchased and I will be bedding a Bell & Carlson stock on whichever one I pick. I like the flat shooting of the 270 but the 3006 seems more versitle (range of bullet weights). I can only have one....which one should it be???

You'd be pretty well served by either. I guess it's no secret here; I'm an '06 fan. They've improved the ballistics over the years to where it shoots just about as flat as the .270 and does have the versatility you mentioned. I'd go with the '06. 0 -
.30-06

Remember that even though there is a range of bullets in 30-06, the gun will be most accurate with one weight due to the rifling of the barrel. 0 -
I'm a big fan of .30-06, when it comes right down to it.

What are you going to do with it??? If the biggest thing you're going to hunt is Mule deer go with the 270. I have both and find the 270 flatter and a little easier on the recoil. 0 -
I'd say 30-06 if you'd be using it for both hunting and practise.
I don't know about in the US, but practise (cheaper) rounds are hard to come by in 270Win.
30-06 is the most versatile of the two.
Probably have twice or more cartridges to choose from too.

Unlike some of the other respected posters here, I am not a fan of the .30-06 and shoot a .270 myself. That said, the .30-06 is probably the most versatile rifle out there. Others are good, but for availability of ammo, diversity of choices in ammo, and the range of game possible with the rifle it is the top choice. It is also the number one selling rifle caliber, and the number one selling ammo caliber. The recoil differences are certianly real, but not great, so unless you are a serious recoil whimp like me, go with the -06 and good shooting!

The 270 winchester has about 4.2 foot pounds less recoil then the 30-06 does. you forgot to mention what you will be using the rifle for, However if all your doing is going whitetail deer hunting, The 270 win has plenty of knock down power for this, And still logical in size for coyote hunting. If you think you may go on a bear or elk hunt one day, perhaps the 30-06 would be a better choice for you.
Better yet take a look at the new short magnums that winchester and remington have come out with. The 270 WSM winchester short mag has some very good ballistics specs, These are becoming quite popular and there is a big demand for these new caliber rifles right now.
For myself I like the 270 much more over the 30-06, Just because I like the recoil better, And I like the lighter weight bullet and quicker feet per second.

I would pick the 30-06 you can hunt anything from long range varmit hunting to hunting any North American game.If you reload you have many options with the 30-06.
Best!!!

Sence Oconors died the 270 wont kill any thing But on the serious side, they are both great callibers, For many years I had one rifle for deer and elk, and the 06 kilt them all fine. 0 -
My choice obviously is that of the majority. You'll be happier with the versatility of the 30.06 by far. Happy Hunting
