Colt Single Action
Is there any way to tell the difference between a 2nd generation and 3rd generation gun. I know next to nothing about colt's and one of my staff members has one her late husband left her. It has patent dates of 1972 - 1973 on the frame under the cylinder. Thanks for any informationl.

I recently inherited two colt pistols. One is a Colt single action serial number 184349. This one is in great condition, I'd say around 90% and very tight. All the numbers match. The other is a Colt double action serial number 35348. It is also in very good shape and the numbers match. I know they are worth a lot but can someone give me a ballpark figure. 0 -
Thanks Saxon its a second generation gun. Unfortunately she had it in a storage box for 17 years and the thing has some sort of corrosion on the outside of one part of the cylinder, going to try to clean it tonight - gun has been fired previously, but looks about 95% She apparently has a few more guns in the same box, hoping she will bring them in so at least they get oiled. Women!
Thanks again for the information.0 -
Patent dates on the Colt SAA should be; Sept 19,1871, July 2,72 and Jan 19,75. There should be no 1873.
First and second generation models have a removable cylinder base pin. the third generation has a pressed-in bushing.0 -
Correct that to read 1st and 2nd Gen cylinders have a removable cylinder bushing. 0
