Skydive, Welcome to the forum...I am fairly new to the area and there are many better-informed folks here that can help but this may get you started...I recently made what I thought was a good trade for the S&W 66, 4" bbl, Stainless for $200.00...the Mod 64 .38 Specials in stainless are available around here at about $150.00 & Mod 66 .357 in stainless are about $200.00...you might check the auctions at gunbroker.com (search smith 66) I saw 4 there this morning similar to the revolver you are thinking about. Best, Jim

    Skydive,

Welcome to GunBroker, appears we might have something in common. If the revolver is as you described it should be in the $300/350.00 range.

Would say 'timbroman' is being a bit optimistic, but if you can get it for that price, leave the cash and run, cause you just got a steal.

    I'd say about $250...

The model 66 is a fine firearm. Blue book on them is more in the $310 range, seems kinda high in my opinion. But I seen them in shotgun news for $250 on police trade ins. I believe Hopelite was selling them.

If ur going to offer him for it, I'd say start at $200 and don't go past $250. They don't have any collectors value, cause they were a highly produced gun, used by alot of police depts before they went to auto's. They are a highly upgradeable gun if ya wanna make a PPC pistol out of it. Holsters, sights, and speedloaders are readily available. If he doesn't like ur initial offer put it this way, if he took it to a pawn shop or dealer for trade in he wouldn't get more that 200 dollars for it.

According to blue book, its a K-Frame revovler, a sstl version of the model 19. The 2 1/2in and 3in barreled versions are worth more than the 4 or 6in ones because only 2500 were made. Thats according to blue book, but it contradicts current catalogs that show that the 2 1/2 model is still being produced. Actually all in all the latest edition blue book doesn't seem to be very accurate on this firearm as far as market prices go anyway.

Here's some more specific info on them at this link:

If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.

Skydive - I'm not a seller, merely a shooter and occasional buyer with some experience in the used handgun market. I suppose the second-hand revolver market in south Louisiana and my approach to used firearm purchases may not be typical...I view the subject gun, though desirable, as absolutely non-essential to me...I believe the gun (or any similarly non-essential item) is worth only the amount of money a buyer is prepared to pay for it...I try not to pay more for stuff than I think I could sell it for (or close to it)...none of the sellers I've dealt with have been fools and they've done the trades freely and willingly, and apparently realized some profit...the pro seller has often bought the gun cheap enough to have some play in the price and the amateur seller is often getting rid of an impulse purchase or a gift or a family hand-down that cost him little or nothing or a gun that his wife has banned from the house and he is essentially dumping it for some cash...unlike a new gun, a used gun comes with a history that can significantly affect its price. And undeniably, the seller's degree of motivation is often a factor. Anyway, in answer to your question as to S&W estimate of value, it is based on several recent trades in which I was either the buyer or had intimate knowledge of the trades and the parties involved.
This August I bought a S&W Mod 66-3 Stainless 4" 357 for $195.74 from my very favorite local pawnbroker...the gun was tagged $199.95 plus tax...I offered $175.00 total cash...we settled at $179.99 plus $15.75 tax. When we were done the pawnbroker made the same deal with my nephew for a Ruger Security Six Stainless 4" 357, $195.74. I think I made the better deal, but all three of us came away happy. There is no doubt in my mind that those revolvers can be bought locally at those prices today (or even less, if one could make contact with the guy who sells to the pawnbroker.)
Earlier this month I bought a S&W Mod 64-3 Stainless 4" .38 Special from the same pawnbroker for $152.20...the gun was tagged $159.95 plus tax...I offered $150.00 total cash...we settled at $139.95 plus $12.25 tax. About two weeks earlier, my older brother bought an almost identical Mod 64-3 for a flat $150.00 cash from an individual here...I know the seller and I know the gun could have been bought for $125.00, but everyone came away happy...and I don't doubt that I could buy 2 or 3 Mod 64's around here every month, for a while anyway, at an average $150.00. But I'm all .38 and .357'ed up now and I'm really out of that market. What I am looking for now though is a Ruger Single Six Stainless .22/.22 Mag...I've looked at several lately but they were either over-priced (for me) and/or not nice enough (one had only the .22 cylinder, no mag cyl) but one day soon the moon will be right and there will come along the right rig for $200.00...I'd say the realistic price range for that rig in this area is $275.00 to $300.00. There's just something tough about nice .22 revolvers here.
Anyway, there you have it...my S&W price estimates based on my local market realities. And special thanks to the gb forum members who have helped me with these "wheelguns"...Best regards, Jim

Thanks Timbroman, it's important to step away from the gun and think about it in terms of basic economic theory.
