Target Ammo vs. Ball Ammo
Does anyone know if there is any major difference using Winchester/USA (or any other manufacturer) Target ammo (cone shaped bullet with the tip cut off) or the FMJ ball bullet ammo? I have always used FMJ ball ammo. I have run across some USA Target rounds with this type of flat head bullet. Is there any accuracy differences on the range or issues with using the rounds in semi-auto pistols?
Thanks

Without more info it is hard to say. Most "target ammo" or "Match
ammo" is usually loaded for less velocity. Also, just to pick out
one example (the 1911 .45 auto) unless one uses a throated barrel,
it does not like to feed semi wad cutter type ammo as it was made for
positive feeding of ball ammo. However this can be corrected. Along
with this, using a lower pressure, as most target rounds are, the
recoil spring usually has to be replaced with a lighter spring, and
if using full power loads then back to the heavier spring for proper
function. Hope this aids you a bit with just one example. As you
undoubtedly know, point of impact also changes.0 -
They are called Truncated Cone and I suppose they are designed to approximate hollow points in practice ammo. I reload these in 40 S&W and had to play with them in length and crimp to get them to feed properly. Try a box or 2 to see if they'll feed. In my Glock they would come off the ramp and occasionally hang on the top of the barrel. After I shortened the length and tightened the crimp the problem disappeared. As far as accuracy, I didn't notice any difference, but 7yd is about the max range I shoot. At longer range, differences will probably be noticed. 0
