.308 sniper, Mauser Model 98, number 2055
I recently was lucky enough to purchase a .308 mauser, scope, sling, synthetic, minor rubs on the blueing at the end of the barrel at an auction. I can't find anyone locally that can appraise the rifle, anyone got help out there?

Need a lot more information to make any kind of assessment. We have the caliber,.308,now who made the rifle, what type of scope and who made it,what power, what about the stock, wood or synthetic? Does it have a bipod? Is the barrel carbon steel or stainless? A picture would be nice. Just because a rifle has a scope doesn't make it a sniper. 0 -
Iriquois, please pay attention to the post, it has all the information you're asking for except the bi-pod, it doesn't have one, and if I say it's blued, would it really be stainless?
The scope is really negotiable isn't it? so take it into consideration, the value of the scope is not what I really was after, (85.00)

Well, I'm guessing its a $39 Turkish Mauser that someone has re-barreled, a synthetic stock can be had for about $50, I guess I'll assume it has $15 bolt on handle kit so the bolt handle will clear the scope .. and of course a military trigger ... This is one of those cases where the parts are worth more than the final product ... I'd say its worth about $185 if the scope is worth $85, sporterized Mausers cost a lot, but aren't worth a lot.

On the other hand, if its a commercial Mauser in something like a HS Precision stock, If the action has been trued, double set trigger yada yada yada ... It could be worth somewhere in the $6000 range ...
I guess if thats all the info you want to give, its worth about $185 - $6000

Iroquois,
I certainly wasn't starting a pissing match here. However, I certainly don't like being talked down to.
I'm sure you knew everything about firearms from the day you were born, congratulations.
I was basically looking for information to help me find out what I have.
I just told you the information in the first post was exactly what you were asking me for in your reply.

Highly unlikely to be a 'sniper' anything. Having a scope mounted doesn't make it a sniper's rifle. I'm guessing it's a sporterized Mauser of some flavour. There are several, most of which are fairly good rifles. Just saying it.s a .308 Mauser isn't enough information. Is there a crest of any kind on the top of the chamber? The Portugese, I think, as well as a bunch of South American countries, re-chambered their Mausers to .308, but that doesn't mean yours is one them. Without knowing which make etc yours is it's very difficult to judge value sight unseen. You'd easily get what you paid for it. Assuming you got a reasonable price in the first place. 0
