I live in CA and am looking to get a gun license to own automatics/assault rifles I was wondering what the steps to get one of these are. How much money is involved and who are the people I need to talk to?

  Within California, there are restrictions imposed on residents of certain cities/counties. I suggest that you locate a local gun shop and pay them a visit. Since you will have to deal with them in order to buy anything, they should be willing to give you advice; if they are not helpful, find another gunshop where they are helpful.
  
  The items you are talking about can be expensive. With taxes and fees, automatic weapons start at around $1,500-2,000, and can easily run much higher. I'm not sure what an "assault weapon" is, but none of my state's Congressional delegation know either.
  
  Expensive fun isn't always fun, but it's always expensive.
