6.5x55 swede purchase question
Hi fellow shooters
I need some help. I just purchased a sportized mauser rifle in 6.5x55 swede cal. I can?t get the symbols from it but on the left side of the rifle right where the receiver ends it says ?Sporting Arms,Clackamas,Or,USA Mauser 98, then on receiver there is a eagle stamp (something like German eagle sign). Can some one give me some feedback on this rifle? I got it for 300$ it is blued 99%+ with Butler Creek stock and BSA 3-12-50 classic scope. What do you think? The guy that I bought it from said that it would be good for deer hunt. I hunt in MD(or at least plan to). Do you think this rifle is suitable for a deer or occasional buck.
Thanks You Mark

Maybe a sporterized Yugo K98? With an aftermarket barrel? Sounds like a professional job maybe. Yea, the 6.5x55swede is a wonderful cartridge, one of my favorites. Its a great deer cartridge. I believe both Remington and Winchester both make hunting ammo. And Sellier & Bellot also makes SP ammo.
If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.

Mark, I wonder if this might have been some of Kimbers first sporters? Maybe someone hear will know. That is where Kimber started before they moved to Bronx N.Y. I don't know of any other gun makers from their. But I'm far from knowing everything. That will be a great gun for PA white tail. I've hunted PA. for 22 years and shot deer with 223,243,250 savage,270,30-30,30-06 and 350 rem mag. The caliber is not as much concern, as having a gun you feel comfortable with.I hunted 15 years till I found a gun that I really like. I wouldn't sell it for anything. If the guns right you will know. 0 -
You have just purchased one of the sweetest little guns ever made. I own several of the M/96's in 6.5X55! Some cut down and sporterized, some still original, and I love every one! The only word of caution is ifyou are going to reload and the gun is of European manufacture! Be very picky on your reloading brass. The Swede's actually designed a totally new cartridge in the 6.5X55. The case head diameter is .480 totally different! All american manufactured brass is made on the head diameter of the 30.06, which is a head diameter of .473. Now when you shoot a round of .473 head diameter in a chamber designed for a .480 case, you get excessive headspace (NOT GOOD). If you aren't going to reload none of this should concern you ENJOY! 0 -

High performance factory loads and handloads make the 6.5x55 suitable for all of the world's thin-skinned big game in the hands of a skilled marksman. Trond Borge Ottersen of Norway, who helped me with some of the historical information in this article, assures me that Norwegians were very active in the arctic around the turn of the 20th Century. They were especially active in whaling and hunting. As a result of this more polar bears have probably been killed with the 6.5X55 than with any other cartridge. Put one of those deadly 6.5mm bullets into a vital spot and you will indeed "bring home the bacon"
with the 6.5x55.

Thanks for the great link. It never occurred to me that you could kill a polar bear with the little Swede. I have always been fond of this cartridge. 0 -
It is a Kimber conversion. Take a look at the thread Kimber??? by Da Tank.

FANTASTIC cartridge. I have owned one for 25+ years and it's my first choice for a deer hunt. Using the 140gr. Nosler Partition bullet it will give you "One shot kills" time and time again. I have a lot of long guns, but my ugly old 6.5 x 55 is my favorite! 0 -
