biggest you can find 150 or bigger I however would want a bigger gun 30-06 0 -
Check out the Federal High Energy loads or a Light Magnum loading from Hornady (I only see this in 140 gr. though). Remington makes a premium loading also. 150 grain is desired, even the small ones are tougher than any deer.

I would go with the Winchester Supreme Partition Gold loaded with 150gr Nosler Partition @ 2950 fps. The Sportsmans Guide has a good selection and prices for ammo .. yep you guessed it, www.sportsmansguide.com ... imagine that !?

Personally,
I would forget the .270, not that it isn't a good caliber. I just
feel that the .30-06 with a minimum 165 Grain is better. Hell I know that it is a better Elk cartridge.0 -
The 270 will work fine. Mine has brought down a lot of elk. It will drop them in their tracks with good bullet placement.Bigger isntbetter if you cant get bullet placement. I reload and use the nosler ballistic in 130 gr.

If your friend is going after elk leave the 270 at home and get a real elk rifle. The smallest rifle I would hunt with would be a 30.06 with a premium 180gr bullet, but my personal elk rifle is a 338 Win mag with 225gr nosler partitions. This rig will shoot from stem to stern if it were nessery to do that. I don't belive a 270 would have enough upmh to even consider a shot looking at the back side of an elk. 0 -
I THINK TAZMUT GAVE YOU SOME GOOD ADVICE. .270 IS CERTAINLY BIG ENOUGHT FOR ELK. I'M NO ELK EXPERT, SO I'VE TALKED TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS I COULD WHO LIVE IN ELK COUNTY AND SHOOT THEM ON A REGULAR BASIS. MOST ARE AMAZED AT THE CANNONS THAT SOME 'EXPERTS' BRING ON ELK HUNTS. MOST I TALKED TO USE CALS. LIKE .30/30, .243, .270 &.30/06 (ON THE BIG END). ONE POST MENTIONED SHOOTING THE SOUTH END OF A NORTH BOUND ELK, SORRY BUT I JUST WILL NOT DO THAT. MOST IMPORTENT IS SHOT PLACEMENT, A BAD SHOT WITH A .50 BMG IS STILL A BAD SHOT. 0 -
If I had use a .270 I would choose the 130gr Bullet.
Best!!!

The .270 is more than enough!! As others have said...."shot placement, shot placement, shot placement....." 0 -
I generally haul out the 7mm for elk, but if you get the bullet where it belongs the .270 will do the job. Hit him in the gut and a .375 is not going to put him down a lot quicker. I agree with Tazmutt, good advice.
