    I have my fathers Sav 99 .300 - probably a 50's
gun - how can I determine the model and approx
    value?

Ive got one that has never been shot. I bought it from an old man that was selling off all his guns. All I can tell you is the ones with the hole in the side where there is a number displayed on the brass rotor are much more valuable in equal shape than the new ones with out the brass rotor counters.

Had a prewar in 250-3000. Had a slower twist and would not stablize a heavy bullet but with 87 gr I worked up a load using 4064 that was AWESOME. Could HIDE 3 shots with a nickle at 100 yards. (I was also much younger and steadier then too)

These guns are great guns to shoot, the biggest thing is understanding that savage is a quality made gun , sometimes the stocks seem to degrade the overall quality of the gun . dont be scared to own a savage heck I have 28 of those 99s.

My Model 99 in 250-3000 Still looks new after 60 years, Never had a problem with it. (Was my Moms Deer & Black Bear gun) with Buck horn sights at 200 yards, Meat in the freez!

Mines a newer model with some rather fine sights, good enough for the range but my eyes cant find that little bead in the woods.

I think the later guns (which are worth less) made a huge improvement with the thumb safety.

Where is the thumb safety? Mine has the safety on the lever.

the thumb safty (tang safty) is on the topof the gun right behind the cocking indicator ( right above your hand on top where the wood and reciever come together )it is alot more convienant, but the lever safty is my favorite.
