Definitely the way to go. It's very easy. Much cheaper if
you shop around for the parts. Don't mess with the Hesse parts.
Rock River lowers are cheap and great quality. (someone has them for $110 on GB) Mine matches my
Bushmaster upper better than the bushmaster lower does. I've had tight magazine fits/won't eject without a tug using Olympic lowers. Go to www.ar15.com to get talked into it all. I built a BM/RR 20"
A-2 for around $550 for all new stuff shopping around. My latest carbine will cost me around $480 (with a Colt Barrel). Pre-ban or Post doesn't matter, the preban barrel assemblies are easily converted to comply for post ban. 7.62X39, don't bother, a feeding nightmare, plus no capacity. It's where you put the round, not how big it is. Good Luck!

Your going into the military, just take one home. All they can dock you is one months base pay. He He He....No really thats a bad idea.

I recall seeing a "Plinker" Carbine built on an Olympic Frame, 16" barrel, A1 upper for $499 in shotgun news. If your interested I can dig thru and find the add.

Noticed that you can get a new reciever from Wholesale G&A for $88... Really. And you can get complete parts kits all day long from various sources in shotgun news for around $400-500 a pop, just depending on what ya wanna build.

If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.

You can get a Bushmaster for less than 800, I just saw a whole table full of them, twice at the most recent gun show, not so sure its worth the effort. One thing Bullzeye, if you are going in the Army, dont plan on taking your guns with you anytime soon, think about that. You wont be allowed to keep them on post in the barracks, living in the barracks, and you sure dont want to put it in the armory. Why dont you wait a while until you can keep it at home with you? I know this didnt exactly answer your question, but you should think about it before you buy or put any guns together.

I've had luck lurking in that e- place for uppers; cruise thru AR15.com for lowers, especially the "US PROPERTY" marked RRA lowers from Pete-in-NH.

Putting together you own AR-15 is certainly possible and can save you some dollars. Be sure of the quality of your parts kit, there can be big differences. I suggest that you go out and purchase the Marine Corps Technical Manual (TM 05538C-23&P/2). It will answer every possible question about how these rifles work and go together. You can pick one up at a gun show for about $10 and it is well worth the money. Let us know how the project turns out.

Won't he need to buy a barrel wrench and a receiver insert for his vise? And headspace gauges?

The best part about building is that you wont be stuck with parts you dont need. For instance, you need an adjustable trigger and a free floating forend for best accuracy so the parts associated with the standard trigger and forend dont have to be bought.
You will need the armorers' wrench and a receiver holding fixture and access to a good vise.
