Choke Question??

On older guns with the FULL choke it is possible to bulge the barrel with larger steel shot (BB, T). I have had 2 of my older guns honed out to modified with great results. The guns work great for steel and for grouse I get a better, wider, pattern with lead.

Steel shot holds its string longer than lead. A modified choke will deliver a pattern simular (not exact,,, varies with guns and shot size) to full with lead.

So.... in short. Have a gunsmith hone your full out to mod not only for safety of gun but better shooting (in my opinion).

Usually steel shot should not be used in chokes tighter than mod.
The set of tubes that came with my Benelli Super Black Eagle say right on them whether steel shot is, or is not, ok.

What is regular choke?? it depends on the gun, some older guns you should never shoot steel no matter what size shot or choke newer guns will eat anything.some gun chokes have right on them say lead i/c-steel mod and so on but that also changes with the size of shot some say in a full steel choke the pelllets hit each other and defelect to make your pattern go all over the place more open more uniform pattern

Thanks for the answers. All my chokes on newer guns are marked with steel or lead.I was planning on takeing my 16 YR old cousin on a hunt and he has a H&R Topper with a modified choke.I told him he probably couldnt use it,but I would loan him one of my semi-autos or pumps.I like the Reel-Guy's idea. Thanks

    Best!!
