You have a lot of choices. The basic one and the one that I own is the Romanian sar-1. Just a good $300.00 ak. Finish is nothing to brag about, but after refinishing the stock and cleaning it up, it has become a nice shooter. People reported problems with canted sights and trigger slap in the 1999 and 2000 models, but those have seemed to imrove greatly in the recent models. Mine was fine.
Also, they have Bulgarian and Maadis, these seem to have a better fit and finish out of the box. They will run you a little more than the Romanians.
There are a few more models that can run you anywhere from $500-$800 bucks. These are almost perfect out of the box. Great finishes and they fit well. But they will cost you.
Personally, I am perfectly happy with my sar-1. It has that traditional Ak rugged look. Great shooter, great price and lots of fun.

Do not get the Egyptian Maadi version, it looks like it was manufactured using a hacksaw. Very poor craftsmanship. Others are all acceptable.

If you're considering a folder, look for a Norinco side folder. It has a solid lockup and like the fixed wood stock you can better access the sights.

A Belgium SLR-100H gets my vote. Milled, not stamped, receiver, nice refinished stock, operates flawlessly out of box, all mag compatible, etc. Yes, they do cost alittle more money, but should appreciate with time, not to mention the use you will get without the frustration.

Buy pre-ban Poly-Tech, either the milled receiver Legand, or the stamped receiver AKS. These have spring-loaded firing pins and are much safer from slam fires with soft-primer commerical ammunition than the other brands.

Check you local laws since not all ak?s are legal in all states. I got 2 mak-90?s one is in .223 and it is a nice little rifles for woodchucks and plinking. The other is mak90 in 7.62x39 milled receiver shoots well and is surprisingly accurate. I shot a groundhog in a chest from 100 yards (maybe I was lucky) I got POSP scope on it (need to install side rail) finish and marksmanship is good but the milled looks and fells better. I got mine .223 for 300$ and the milled 7.62 for 365$ almost new (20 shots through it) I Like them. But be careful! States like NJ only allow particular settings like thumbhole stock instead of regular on and no bayo lug.
Shop around and ask questions before buying. Good luck
