Garand pronunciation

It is my understanding from page 3 in Scott Duff's book that the great man himself pronounced his name as you would say the word "parent"- with a G inplace of the P. I know quite a bit about the rifles, but I'm no linguist. I wont even try to spell out how to pronounce that. I
do know that the common Ga-rand is incorrect...although I often say it that way myself. I'm sure that Neal Myers is reading this post. Do you have any inside info on this Neal?

Try saying "Grand Old Man". The way it was pronounced in
    the Pentagon during WW11.

How bout MAS? Do you pronounce it out, "maus" or say M.A.S. which is more proper? Or Moisin-Nagant? That's a hard one, I always said it wrong until recently.

Well, I read Poyer and Riesch's "M1 Garand 1936-1957", and the authors indicate that Mr. Garand's name was pronounced the same as "errant". I think that this is consistent with the family's French-Canadian heritage.

The special on the history channel about him and his rifle pronounces it GAR like the first 3 letters of the name GARY, and then the word AND added to the end.

A great rifle with a junk scope,....is junk.

Literature I've read stated that it was "Gar" as in Gary as stated by Just C, followd by "errant" as stated by Neal, for Gerrant--like Gar-rhant. It does make one feel ignorant in a conversation when using the common "Garand" to be corrected in a subtile manner by someone using the French pronounciation. I propose that we refer to it as the M1 Rifle and/or its inventor!

Mr. Garand prefers that the accent be placed on the first syllable; however the more common (if incorrect) pronounciation places the accent on the second. In any event it is one GREAT rifle!
    Have fun, be careful
