First off you must be very careful that you are not manufacturing a REAL suppressor! It is very easy to get into serious trouble here becuase the defintion of a silencer is any device for the deminishing of the report of a weapon[ shortend by me, check the full text of the law]. Basically anything you put on the end of a firearm to lesson its report is a suppressor. Watch your step if your "can" quites your rifle by ANY degree it is a suppressor. Your fake should have a central bore as close as possible to the caliber of the bullet fired, that way no gas will expand inside your tube and lesson the sound.
The quick and easy way is to use set screws, but these seldom hold up
through extended shooting. You can dimple the barrel and then put the set screws into the recesses and that will help, but will not completely solve your proble. The best method and the most secure is to use high temperature silver solder to hold your unit into place. You can legaly thread the barrel and screw on your "can", then silver solder it into place. This is permanent and the BATF does not consider the barrel threaded if the "can" is silver soldered as it cannot be removed. Industrial tread lockers (lock tight) WILL NOT COMPLY and are not considered permanent by the BATF. You should also be aware that if your unit in any way lessons the rifle flash signature it will be considered a flash hider and that will count as one of the "deadly features" banned under the 1994 assualt weapons act. Still want to give it a try? You don't mention where you live. Are live suppressors legal in your state? Good luck.

ouch, i suppose it will entail more work than i imagined. my state does not allow live suppressors, therefore i am worried about whether or not i can legally make a fake one after your post. i suppose i may be forced to go for one of the airsoft ones from MFI that i found out from one of the previous posts. one more thing, would it be possible to thread a FAKE cobray suppressor onto my gun permently, so i could avoid the chance of accidently making a real one?? if so how can i get my barrel threaded, and where?? thanks for your help

cwin, first I'm sorry that I responded to a post adressed to someone else...but since he did not respond I thought I'd chime in. You may still be able to build your own "can", I just wanted to make you aware of the potential hazards. Adapting a pre made fake suppressor
sounds like a good idea to be as it eliminates the danger of you making a live unit. Any gunsmaith can tread your barrel and install the "can". Standard threads are 1/2X28 for the AR-15. Smith Enterprises in Tempe, AZ @480-964-1818 will thread barrels and might also install your fake suppressor. Remember, legally you can't have the complete rifle with a treaded barrel even for a short time, without it being an assualt weapon. Have the barrel threaded and the "can" mounted BEFORE you reinstall the upper on your rifle. If you don't want to go the silver solder route you can also have the barrel threaded and after the "can" is screwed on the unit can be pinned in place and then welded so that it cannot be removed. The BATF would condider this permanent if the pins are completely covered with weld. Many years ago I remember a company that made a near perfect copy of a SIONICS suppressor for the M16/AR-15. I used to see these at gun shows selling for around $50. There must still be a few out there...I'd look around. Good luck.
