M1 Garand Help
I'm thinking about buying a MI Grand through the CMP program. I'm wondering how good of shape these rifles really are. I was thinking about buying a rack grade springfield or even a Danish with the VAR Barrel in the Winchester. So I'm just wondering what peoples past experiences are from buying from The CMP Program. Is it worth driving there and picking out your own or just order by the phone and get what they give ya. Any input in this will be greatly appreiciated. Email is rjb@30below.com

I want to buy a m1 garand to target shoot. I dont want to spend alot on it and know nothing about them. I did inherit 80, yes 80 cans of ammo for it. Its 3006 ammo. I want something that I have to fix up a little. I want to spend under 800 for it. What do I look for and is there a certian model??? Thanks for any help. Oakie. 0 -
If you are going to drive, be advised their stock rotates and they probably won't have a Danish Service grade, though probably will have rack grades. I have found them to be very helpful. I recently got a Danish Springfield reciever VAR barrel from them in quite nice shape. Go with the service grade though if you aren't going to rebarrel; not that rack grades won't shoot but they probably won't be quite as accurate.

I got two garands back when the program was called the D.C.M. and the rifles were $165.00.
At that time it was pretty much the luck of the draw. Some guys would get really nice rifles and some would get so-so guns, but they were all good shooters.
My rifle was really nice, and the other (my wifes) was just about brand new, and looked like it had never been fired.
I have never heard of being able to drive down and pick one up from the D.C.M. or the C.M.P. By the way they are one in the same. The Director of Civilian Marksmanship was the predecessor of the Civilian Marksmanship Program.
My guns were shipped from the Anniston Alabama Army Depot. Iam not sure where they come from now.

I recently (last week) received an M1903 Springfield from CMP. It was exactly as advertised. The receiver, a high number Rock Island Arsenal, was mfg. in 1918 and rebarrelled with a High Standard barrel dated 7-44. The metal cleaned up to almost like new, and the bore is new, but the bolt is shiney from use. The stock has definately seen some use, and while sound, is covered with a variety of nicks and dents. I was very impressed with the packaging job; a heavy duty cardboard box lined with egg crate foam--reusable for further shipping or storage. When the program was DCM I acquired two M1s, and while neither was like new, both were very serviceable and not beat up; certainly better than the "Blue Sky" rifles imported later from S.Korea. I've never seen one of the Danish returns, but think you would be best served by acquiring a U.S. Service Grade.

You need to check the CMP web site as I beleive they are sold out of the Danish Winchester Garands, or at leat have a very long waiting period to fill your order. I purchased two of these Danish rifles a few years back when they were first available. One was a late war Springfield in very nice shape, it even had the original lock-bar sight. The other was not nearly so nice. It was simply the luck of the draw.
I'm not sure about picking out your own rifle, although I think that there is some way to do it with the Danish Garands. At any rate I recommend you check availablity before you visit.

You most certainly are allowed to go to Port Clinton and buy one. They now have a CMP store open M-F. I picked up a Mossberg there though as I say, I ordered my Garand from Anniston. The nice thing about the VAR rifles is that some have new barrels, whereas all US are used.
