If your serious about this, I assume you are going the custom rifle route. If so, take a look at the 300 Pegasus or the 338 Excalibur. Both of these cartridges are in the A-Square loading manual "Any Shot You Want" available from Midway. These calibers top the Ultra Mags in down range ballistics but you pay a price with recoil. Brass is available from A-Square. Their website is www.asquarecompany.com.

It would certainly be a good gun for the Job.But there is alot of recoil behind it,that may affect 1000yrd accuracy? I would consider maybe the 300 Win short mag, another suggestion depending on your use I consider the 22-250 as about as good as it gets.

    Best!!

Go for the gusto, how about doing a 408 Chy-Tac (SP) or 338/416 Rigby Improved or even a run of the mill, plain jane, 338 Lapua ?
The boys over at www.longrangehunting.com can answer a lot of your questions for you, most do the 1000yd bench thing also.

Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.

A few years ago, early 90's, there was a father-son team that cleaned house on the 1000 yd. benchrest circuit. They won practically everything in sight for several years. Can not remember their names, but they both shot rifles chambered for the standard 300 Weatherby Magnum. All cartridges are capable of having headspace problems. It depends on your particular chamber, dies and brass. You eliminate the problem by resizing the case so the shouler is not set back and you are using the shoulder as the reference for headspace for your individual chamber. Makes no difference whether the cartridge is rimless, belted, or rimmed. Size the brass to fit each individual gun and chamber, you will have no problems. Do you subscribe to Precision Shooting? It would be a good magazine for you and they cover 1000 yd. bench shooting. Lots of good writers and articles. I think you can also get most of the back issues and an index of the past articles and issues. Might be worth the effort to glen some of their past articles for ideas on calibers and what you want to build.

Thank you gentlemen for your replys.

smithgm, I will take a look at them. Recoil makes little difference on a 20lb rifle, I have used a 30hart with a 30" barrel. I bet you could set the scope on the tip of your nose and fire it with no bruises.

rugster, I have a friend who recently finished a 300wsm that is shooting approx .5moa even at 300yds. That one may be a final contestant as well. You are correct about the 22-250. I think the 222, 223, 22-250, and 220swift are very hard to beat.

tailgunner1954, thanks for the link. I think I will become a member to pick their collective brains. I want to build one that I won't soon be wanting to rebarrel or trade in. the next one I plan on getting into the competition with. Over the next few years, I will moving to a larger piece of property, and that is when I will be gearing up to get into serious competiton. Those boys should be able to help me.

25-06, Our head sniper at the police station here in town has been winning 1000yd competitions with the 300wtby. I am considering that one very seriously as well. I just thought that the 300ultra had a tad more horsepower which may help buck the wind at 700+ yds a little better, but the research continues.

A great rifle with a junk scope,....is junk.
