Remington 78 Sportsman
I am looking to buy a hunting rifle right now and my father has a friend that is selling one. All the info I have heard is that it is a Remington 78 Sportsman in .270. It also comes with a redfield scope (not sure which model). How is the quality of this gun? Just would like to know more about it. Also, what would a fair price be on this. Thanks.

I think it's a cheaper version of the 700. I think they stopped making the gun in the late 80's. I would say the gun with scope is worth about $250 now; more during hunting season, less in the off season. 0 -
The 78 was made from 1984-1989. The stock is uncheckered
hardwood. Like rballi said, it was a cheaper version of the
700. Best I remember it had a matte finish, and the only one
I worked on appeared the metal work was not as polished and
well finished as the 700 (tool marks not polished out, etc.).
Similar to the 870 Express compared to the 870 Wingmaster.
My Blue Book is a couple of years old and shows 100%--$270,
98%--$235, 95%--$210, 90%--$190, 80%--$170.

I had one in 243 years ago the thing shot clovers at 100 yds with hand loads bought one in 308 a few years for 250 at a show just for the reciever the bolt was jeweled nice built a long range gun out of it If the scope was in good shape I'd spend 275-300 on both might be good to borrow it first and take it out to see how it groups. I remember I free floated the barrel and did a crude glass bed job and was real happy 0 -
garandfan,
The Rem 788 was one hell of a gun. It was a no frills weapon that would shoot with the best of them. They are very much in demand and you don't see too many in 270 cal.
If I were looking for one, I would pay in the area of $300 bucks for one, especially with a decent scope on it. The only problem is finding magazines for them, but you should be able to find them at a good gun show once in a while. Keep us posted as far as the condition and scope.
Good luck.0 -
Thanks, it sounds like I should at least take a look at it and see if he will let me shoot it. He says it hasn't been shot much at all because he bought it to replace a stolen gun and he didn't end up shooting it much. Told me scope was bought for about 120 bucks, he didn't remember the model though. I'll go and check it out. Can anybody tell me or if you know a website, that goes over the things you should look for when buying a used rifle. Just want to make sure. Thanks.
