damaged german drilling rifle
Good day,
I write to ask for your expert advise on a german drilling rifle. I have the opportunity to acquire a great german drilling from a friend but, he informs me that the rifle needs some minor repairs. Upon inspecting the rifle I discovered that the forward barrel seat (the forward one of the "feet") is cracked in various places. My friend tells me this is a minor issue as it is simple to repair. My question to you is, is this rifle repairable or is it done for? If repairable, can anyone out there recommend someone to perform the repair and approximately how much would it cost? I understand that giving me an idea of cost is difficult without actually seeing the item, but a ballpark figure would be enough. Thanks ahead for your time and I look forward to your expert reply.
Sincerely,

First, drillings aren't all that much appreciated here in the left side of the big pond. No matter how nice, the value might not justify the fix.
Perhaps more important is not the visible damage, but what caused it. German guns aren't known to come apart for no reason. You really need to dig deeper.

Sir-It sounds like a serious and expensive problem. These guns were expensive to begin with and even more so now. At one time (pre-war) there were many small manufacturers of these guns (today very few) and the odds are very good that yours went out of business. There are not many gunsmiths in this country that will work on them, but there are some. It is interesting that the seller believes the problem to be minor, and an easy fix. Were I you, I would ask him where he proposes that you accomplish the repair and at what cost. Anything is possible, but more than likely you are looking at an expensive and interesting wall-hanger. 0 -
try mackoolfirearms.com (918-663-3880)----jiperodeau.com(580-237-7388)best to have make(or makers name) caliber, they also could give a ball park value. if anyone thinks these have little value, look in gun list. 0 -

If this gun is showing Stress Cracks, I'd stay away from it...Something drastically is Wrong for this to happen..I could sit here and speculate for an hour...But would actually need to have the Weapon in Question in hand for an analisis...Any Good Gunsmith will be able to Look it over and give you a fair assessment as to the cause of this problem....But as for repairing it...Thats questionable...You can't just go welding on Recievers and Barrels and Tennions, as the Metal will have Hard and Soft Spots...and that makes for a Very Serious and Dangerous situation...I'm actually wondering if this Gun might be an Apprentice Made Drilling...? The old Country Apprenticeship Programs required that as an Apprentice approached the end of the Apprenticeship program, He be required to build a Rifle or Shotgun or Combination thereof to prove to his Peers that he was capable and ready to take His Place as a Journeyman in the Field...This could be one of these guns...? If it is...then its a one of a kind and NO gunsmith will touch it, as the liability would be astronomical if it blew up or apart in the shooter hands...If it was such and easy fix, why did'nt your Friend have it fixed?...Again...I agree with several others...Stay away from this particular Piece....better safe than sorry....
