all 1911's have 3 built in safets, but bottom feeding lawyers, & scum sucking politicans, forced Colt in self defense to add 3 extra safety parts+ springs to the 1911's, thus 80 series. to the second part>> you will here, kimber, springfield, wilson, & others>> but you can't go wrong with a COLT. But try for one before the 80 series, you don't need the extra parts. THEN ANY COLT IS BETTER THAN NONE! 0 -
The series 80 was developed to correct the situation in the series 70's where if the gun was dropped, the firing pin could have enough inertia to detonate the primer when the pistol hit the ground. I believed they solved the problem by incorporating a firing pin lock that would only disengage when the trigger was pulled. Most gunsmiths I have spoken to would prefer to work with a series 70. 0 -
It's literally imposible to get a series 70 to go off by dropping it. I think just the fact that it was theoretically possible is why it was made. After it was brought to the attention of several in buying ranks of law enforcement and taken off of several lists of possible duty arms just because of this technicality, colt decided to add the little safety feature, which many companies making clones decided not to do after attention died down.
A few people I know removed the lever arm, block, and springs from their guns do to the shear fact that the less parts it has to break.
If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.

I'll add that when the firing pin safety is removed, it's supposed to improve the trigger pull. 0 -
I don't know about you, but the only way that I want any of my guns to fire is if I pull the trigger. I can direct anyone out there to vidoetape of many, many guns, even those that have "legendary" status, that fire when dropped. Colt did the right thing. 0
