8 MM Comercial Mauser
I would like opinions as to wether an 8 MM Comercial Mauser can be converted to 8 MM Remington Magnum with out changing barrel etc.?
Thanks for your advice.

I'm not a smith but I would have to guess yes, if it is a large ring and you have the chamber reamer and so on. The bullet diameter is the same. Be sure it is a 98 .323 not a .318 before doing so though; also many Commercial mausers are worth quite a lot and I would think twice before hacking one up.

Regarding the conversion: bad idea! The 8mm Rem Mag is a much longer cartridge which likely won't fit in the magazine w/o lots of work. The bigger diameter will require feed rail modification. The magnum works at much higher pressure than the 8mm mauser.

Hmm, hadn't thought about the length. In that case reaming out your existing chamber is probably a bad idea, both for the mag and the safety issues. On the other hand, if you use a whole new barrel, the Mauser actionitself should be plenty strong. I'm curious to see what some others weigh in. Regarding power though- the load books are very conservative with the 8mm Mauser cartridge in case someone puts a .323 bullet through an 88 or early 98 with a .318 bore. While I doubt the cartridge could be hot-rodded to the level of an 8mm Rem. Mag. it certainly could take a good deal stouter charge than most load books say. Still, proceed at your own risk when abandoning load data as published.

You could always go with the 8X68. It is just about the equal of the 8mm Mag but only the length of the 300 win mag case. Has no silly belt either.

Thanks all, I also have a Turkish Mauser model 1938, I think I'll play with that one rather than the comercial Mauser. I think I'll try the 8x68s, should be a beast.
Again,
