Thinking of taking up Muzzleloading
Well the way I plan on getting a gun is to have my H&R SB2 Ultra turned into one. Which caliber would be best for deer hunting 45 caliber or 50 caliber they are my only choice

50 has more power, a 45 shoots a liitle flatter--take your pick but my 2 cents says 50

I would go with .50 as well, there are a great range of bullets available and you can also get Pyrodex pellets for a .50 which make life easier.

thanks for the replies i was leaning towards the 50 but a friend said i should go the route of the 45 he said there was more bullet selection and such i looked and didnt' seem to be a big difference. And reading a book called something like advanced muzzleloading or soemthing of the nature not in front of me at the moment and it hasn't really said much about the differences, only on like chapter 4 or 5 and i skipped the section where he rates guns since i decided the route i want to go on that front. 0 -
I have 50 cals in the Rem 700 ML stainless w/ synthetic stock and a Knight. In both I shoot sabots with 45 cal jacketed ammo. The 9mm is great for deer as well. The increased spped = good shock and they come down quick.
I also use sulfer free powder. Stuff is great and I have shot as many as 50 rounds without cleaning!! With no sulfer it is much easier on gun.
Go with the 50 cal but shoot sabots and smaller ammo. My 02 worth0 -
