Winchester Red Letter
I was looking at an auction on a Winchester 1400 in the discription it said Red Letter. What makes this "Red Letter" special? Thanks

Did the Red letters come from the factory with red or was it a trend to put red into the letters?

Ill be the first one to admit to haveing ate crow if Im wrong,my Data Base shows no mention of the 1400 Red Letter,I found it on the Model 37s.But I think it is the amount that are made and the quality of Materials used.Oak Stock,gold trigger and fine checkering.

On some models you will find a red letter W on the butt cap.I have a mod 100 carbine that has one.I should have said grip cap.

I had a Model 70 (1965) Bolt Action that had a red 'W' on the grip cap. I guessing it signifies an older gun, maybe before the 80's. 0 -
The only Winchesters I ever heard of referred to as "red letter" were some of the earlier model 37 single shot shotguns. The "Winchester" brand name was stamped deeply into the bottom of the receiver and the letters were filled with red enamel. The model 37 was a cheap gun and early in production this feature was dropped, probably to save money. Red letter model 37s bring a slight premium over the plain ones.

Some Winchester model 62a gallery guns had Winchester roll die'd on the side of the reciever and filled with red enamel. But I never heard them called "Red Letter".
