Darne Halifax
I have a Halifax double barrel shotgun. Sliding Breech. The barrel lock is stamped w/GARANTI POUR, IOOIESPOURESRYRONILEE'S
Crown over PT w/appears to be a squiggly X. Or cross arms. Or maybe palm leaves.
Fusil Halifax No3
license DARNE
65
On the beginning of the barrel it has - STETIENNE 17.0 w/cross arms and It appears to be a crown.
On the Barrel Lock is a capitol B in a circle.
I have pictures I can Email to anyone that can help me find answers about this shotgun. Thanx, Cindy
Also does anyone know an estimate of the value of this gun. I am trying to get insurance.

French gun. Quality will be rather good, no matter the grade. My French is lacking so I can't say whether damascus or fluid steel tubes. (You can tell damascus by a spiral design on the tubes and the fact that they're usually browned, not blued.)
Unless the gun has much inlay and is in exceptional condition insurance really won't be an issue. Even those these are high quality pieces, they aren't appreciated here on the left coast of the Atlantic. Even nice one's seldom top the $1,000.00 mark unless they're VERY special.

Saxon, That's what I told my husband when he bought the Darne Helifax. That's why I'm on this Darne Forum trying to find answers. Thanks for the Humer, Cindy 0 -
Dear Cindysue,
I was fortunate to receive 2 Darne (pronounced Darnay) shotguns in 16 ga. from my father-in-law. He liberated them during Patton's charge through France. From his description of the building he took them from and his recollection of the geography he covered on his march through France, his platoon may have taken them from the Darne factory at St. Etienne. Upon his return to south Georgia he used the guns to hunt birds and squirrels. Today, both guns are in good working condition. The stock on one(they have an unusual stock)is broken and still sports the crude but effective repair done in 1947. The barrels are modern steel and I have fired the one with the good stock recently at a local clay pigeon shoot. These guns are a real attention getter. What gauge is your shotgun? Darne made 10 ga through 28 ga over the years. The company is still in business in the town of St. Etienne, doing mostly custom work, I think. The breech design was patented before 1900. There may have been some Damascus type barrels made, not sure. Best of luck with your new and very interesting acquisition.
