Rampart Gun or Punt Gun.Who knows???
I lust traded for an old muzzle loader that is marked Tower on the lock and the barrel. It has the British broad arrow stamp,which leads me to believe that it was owned by the Crown in it's early life. Probably a military RAMPART GUN. It was a flintlock in the past but is now a percussion. The bore looks to be at least 1". The barrel is 56" long with one thimble left where there were three at one time. The stock is in fairly good condition and goes up the barrel a third of the way. The ramrod is missing. Aside from DIXIE, do you know where I might find parts and springs for such a lock???Any idea of the value of such firearms?????Is there a demand for such things???If so where??
I was wondering if it was used by a PUNTER in it's later life.Found it in a yard sale here in Oregon of all places.I understand they are still legal in the British Isles for punting.Any and all help appreciated.Thanks,modoc

modoc: good Evening Sir; Punt Gun or Rampart Gun...? By the description you gave I'd say PUNT GUN..But that's going to depend upon the Butt of the Gun...The Punt was a Boat that Early day Market Hunters used..The Punt had a Post Mounted in the Stern to rest the Butt of the Gun against, as there was No shoulder made that would take that kind of punishment when it went BANG! The Rampart Gun Normally had a very short Fore Stock, as it had a Spike Welded to the Bottom of the Barrel. The Ramparts had Holes in the Masonry that the Spike dropped into..It was just like a Poormans Machinegun Mount..You had to have something to absorb the Recoil when this Cannon went off!
It would be very interesting to see a couple of Photos of this Gun ! Think you could take a few Photos and Pass them along...Parts are going to somewhat difficult to find that would drop In for your gun...Everything will most likely have to be made to Fit or at the very least Hand Fitted from something that comes close...A Friend of Mine that makes Kentucky Rifles found another Company that Handles Percussion and Flintlock Parts up in Minnesota...Its called Track of the Wolf, Inc.

Punt gun would be my guess also, I have seen numerous rampart guns, they were all large bore with short barrels for ease of loading in a battle. Old locks were commonly used in punt guns so that if lost over the side, a new lock was not lost, I have an idea these market hunters did not have much money to be investing in new locks on guns that were exposed to the elements and often dumped in the bottom of the punt with dead birds and salt water. 0 -

To answer the question about the lock.YES,I will be replacing the percussion parts to flint if I can find the correct parts.Am not going to screw it up if I can help it...It also needs a ramrod so will probably whittle it out of oak.I intend to fire it with Black powder and a wad only.I can't imagine the powder flask this thing needed.It is 6'1 1/2" long.Any body out there have a front sight for one of these things??????It was cut for a sight in a dovetail.The tower lock is 6 5/8 long and 1 1/4" wide.TOWER on the back end with the EAGLE and V.R. which I assume stands for Victoria Rex. on the lock plate.The first 19 1/4" of the barrel is octagonal.The stock is paddle shaped.
What more can I mention??It has completely knocked my socks off.Such a wonderful find.Too bad the previous owner isn't still around.But if he was I wouldn't have the piece yet.
