8mm Mannlicher Schoenaur?
I picked up a bag of ammo at a gun show labeled simply, "Old 8mm Mauser" for a good price, in that it was all reloadable. It did look quite tarnished, but pulling a few bullets showed the powder to be ok, so I shot it. Upon coming home, I find that a few cases are stamped "Western 8mm Mann Schoen." I had never heard of this case but looked it up in Handloader's guide to Cartridge Conversions, and Voila, there it is, 8X56 MS. Given that the bullet diameter is the same as 8mm mauser and the head is the same size at .470, is there any reason I shouldn't continue to use this in my Mauser? Cartridges of the World says that Western discontinued it in 1938, so it is quite old, but the brass is in good shape and I would hate to scrap it.

There are a few 8X56 Mannlicher Schoenauer rifles around and the owners have a very difficult time finding ammo. It would be a mistake to shoot this in an 8X57 when it is so valuable to the owners of rifles chambered for it. 0 -
It is just empty brass now. I wonder, why couldn't owners of these rifles just trim 8mm Mauser brass down and load that?

Pretty simple matter to form the brass from 8x57. I have the dies; all you have to do is trim the shells back, resize & anneal. You could use .30-06; I've seen it done that way, but there's the potential some idiot would just slap it in an '06 chamber . . . . 0
