7.5x55 swiss or 7.5x54 french
To me it looks like a lawsuit waiting to happen. A sports store is selling the k-31 swiss rifles in great shape at a reasonable price. The problem is no ammunition available.Right next to the rifles they are selling 7.5x54 french mas ammunition but I've yet to see a french rifle in the place. I know its only 1 millimeter but I say its an acident waiting to happen. How dangerous is this. Can I mention the store by name as it is nationally known.

I don't know about the interchangability between the two cartridges, so due to my ignorance on the subject I can only advise to not attempt to fire the 7.5french in the 7.5swiss gun. It sound like bad practice to me.
I can say that 7.5 swiss ammo is pretty widely avialable, though I know of no current domestic manufacturer, its widely imported. But its not cheap to shoot either. The swiss like their watches, make a darn fine and accurate rifle, and their ammo is ususally precision quality too from my experience.
As fat as the 7.5french, I know SOG offers the MAS 49/56 Comamndo Carbine, and I've seen both the MAS36 and the MAS49 on gunbroker's auctions on and off.
Here's some suppliers that might help ya out a little:

SOG 800-944-4867

Norma commercial ammo is readily obtainable for the 7.5x55 - at a nice profit to the importer. One sees surplus military from time to time. Harder to find the French ammo; I'm not aware of any commercial ammo for it - at least on this side of the pond - and the surplus ammo has never been terribly plentiful.
To address your main issue, the French round is slightly shorter and has a slightly smaller case diameter. If the bolt picks it up, it should chamber. Might not fire because the configuration differences could keep the primer far enough from the firing pin? Don't know enough about the guts of the weapons to make that call. No way I'd want to try shooting it. At the very least, inadequate support for the case in the chamber. Especially with older military surplus ammo, the dice would come up snake eyes sooner or later and the shooter would have at best an unpleasant surprise.0 -
Over on the Swiss rifle Forum, someone awhile back accidentally fired some 7.5 French out of a K-31 Swiss. The case bulged rather badly as the head is smaller, but survived. Still I don't recommend it. They are two totally different, if dimensionally similar cartridges and should be treated as such.

The results jonk reported are pretty much what I would expect. And one day there would be a casing which had lost too much of it's elasticity . . . bad. 0 -
There is some 7.5x54 french reloadable ammo avalable. I have bought several boxes of FOM ammo made in Portugal. I have found it at gunshows for around $13 a 20 round box. It is new manufacture and is boxer primed. The same company also makes 7.5x 55 Swiss. These are both easily reloaded since they use .308 Dia. bullets. 0 -
Thank you
Really apreciated the information.I had the store move the 7.5x54 to the end of the case and put the right ammo 7.5x55 next to the rifle. They did have 7.5x55 military surplus but didnt realize what rifle it went to. Duh! Having achieved that I bought the nicest one they had and 4 boxes of shells. I'm dying to adjust windage on the front sight.0 -
1. we just shot ours.(my father and i). they hold dime size 3 shot groups atb one hundred yds with iron sights. we shot 3 ammos the norma, reloaded norma, and late 70's swiss production. all performed the same, but the norma required a little pressure on the action to chamber. the fireformed empties seemed to fit perfectly.
2. hornady just reintroduced 7.5x55 swiss into there FRONTIER lineup and graf and sons plans on stocking it.
3. there are more markings, cartouches, ordinance proofs, inspection marks, etc... on these guns than you would believe possible. try removing the buttplate. underneath should be a card telling you what unit had the gun, and who it was issued to, were the unit was stationed, and when he was born.
4. numrich arms sells all the parts including complete stocks.
5. www.aimsurplus.com sells a 480 round case of late 80's production gp-11 brass case ammo for 168.00. call 1-888-748-5252.
6. try www.swissrifles.com
7. these are great guns, and most will shoot better than minute of angle out to 300 yds. hope you have fun, and that i was of help.

I have a 1911 model that is about the same as the 31 except a longer barrel. If you really want to see what they will do, try handloading. I use the Hornady 168 gr match bullets in mine. 0
