Question about California gun laws
I'm planning a move to California soon and would like to know what I'd be allowed to own their. I heard you can't have assault rifles their, yet you can have an M1A or M1, which are still semi-auto. What's the real story over their?

If you are planning your move to the "Golden State" leave your assualt weapons elsewhere. There are three different assualt weapons law in effect in California; The first from 1989 bans guns by manufactures model: an AR-15 is a COLT only. The second ban came from the then ew Attorney General who discovered eh had the power to add simular guns to that first ban list. AR-15 "type" weapons- Bushmaster, Olympic Arms, Eagle Arms- there are dozens of AR-15 and AK types on that second list. The third of these laws ban guns by their features: pistol grips, flashiders, THUMBHOLE STOCKS (yes, there is a ban on guns with thumbhole stocks) and the usual other
"deadly" features. This is just a brief overview of the nightmare.
If you have any firearms which meet these or any other difinition of one of the various bans you are not allowed to possess it in California. The is NO provision in the laws for anyone moving into the state to register these firearms. All of these laws had different cut-off dates and after the time ran out, that was it. Visiting match shooters and gun dealers doing demonstrations for law enforcement and the military may have unregistered assualt weapons in the state for brief periods, but don't try to push that very far. You have to be legit all the way around. Your M1A will only be legal if you remove the flashider. Springfield Armory sells an approved muzzel brake.
For your additional information, upon arrival you have two weeks to have your handguns registered with the Department of Justice. This is done on a form available at most gun dealers. You simply fill out the form, pay a registration fee of $20 for the first handgun and $16 for each additional gun. You then leave the guns with the dealer for the states 10 waiting period. That is OK because you'll need that time to take the mandated handgun saftey course- goes into effect in 2003. If you are ex-military you are exempt for the remainder of this year. Once you have your safety card you can go back to the dealer and take your handguns to their new home. Still want to live in California with your guns? Trust me, new laws go into effect next year which will make things even worse.

Do yourself a favor and stay out of California. I'm talking to my public officials about trying to close off Nevadas borders to keep those super freaks and their liberal agenda out of our country. I propose checkpoints similar to agricultural checkpoints to keep them where they belong. Californians(most) are a virus, to bad the government won't let people administer a cure!!! 0 -
Moving into a gun unfriendly state is a tacit approval of their laws. I hope you have alternatives. I like California and have family there, but their politics and laws are so Machiavellian.

OK I can say one good thing about California. My dad lives there and he is a gun enthusiast, every time California passes a new illegal law my dad has to give me his guns Its Christmas at my house more than you would believe. 0 -
Wow, I had no idea it was THAT freakin' bad! Thanks for the warning. That seriously makes me reconsder moving there! 0 -
Living in CA is NOT an endorsement of the commi/nazi laws that are here. It's a perfectly good state with atrocious government that needs conservative educated people to change for the better. I enjoy the scenery, the cultural diversity and the income and don't think people should live in fear of their government. After fighting hot and cold wars against communism, I can't imagine Americans fleeing from a great state rather than reclaiming it.
If conservatives avoid the state, it simply leaves it in the undisputed control of socialists and ecofreaks. C'mon over and help take back the government. If CA falls to socialism, it is only a matter of time before the nation follows.

Mr. Christian is right! Things are tough in California and get worse every January 1st! I believe next year I will have to give a thumb print every time I purchase a new handgun as well as having to show I know how to load and unload it! Saying this we need more gun friendly people in this State to try and change things.
Anyway, a good reference source is:

Hope this helps, please remember we are not all alike in California!0 -
Grease Monkey: Don't forget to bring a utility bill with you whenyou go to purchase that handgun next year. You will need to prove you've maintianed resident status for at least 90 days. Rent receipts, utility bills in YOUR name, or other proof will be requiered. Of course you can only purchase one handgun a month anyway so you'll have plenty of time to copy those gas bills between trips to your dealer!
P.S. I should have logged onto this site years ago, this is great fun!

Take it from another Kalifornian, My Red Ryder BB gun, is reg-is-Turd
1 it does not have a flash Supressor,
2 it does not have a bea-o-net lug,
3 it does not hold more than 10 BB's 15 (Pre ban)
4 It will not kill whales,
5 The stock is made of re-cycled plastic (tree friendly ya know)
All kidding aside, if you have a rifle in question "check it out before you take it out" You could lose a good thing,. the gun rules in California change every day. California (I feel) is the U.S. testing ground for gun control. See, or look up in your internet search,
" Agenda 21 " And you will get the big picture

Kalifornian having conservatives come to the state will not help it. The fact that men of the state have allowed what has happened there tells me they lack Cahoneys. When they tried to raise the price of a can of Copenhagen to $10 was the last straw for me. I personally contacted the Governor and told him I'm a military member and tobacco keeps me sane, I did not agree to raising the price to prevent children from buying it as Kalifornia claimed was the reason, and if China invaded Kalifornia I was going to leave the State and hold them at the Rockies.
The price dropped. Maybe I had something to do with it, maybe not. Either way I fear no man and wanted my voice heard.
In the next 50 years Kalifornia will be saved I swear. When the oil supplies run out Suburbia will no longer exist. Think about that.0 -
Hey ,
WHY would a sane normal law abiding gun type person even think of moving to the Republic of Kalf...other than to commit rights suiicide?
whats up with that , and dont just "leave" your guns someplace , let me hold them for you .....anyhow , Good Luck !!!!!!
