Don't think much of the idea. You will wind up with a case that is to small in the base and to short in overall length. 0 -
The only common American brass you can effectively use is the .284 Winchester case (and they're not all that 'common') . But they will work. The final fire-formed case will be a little short in the neck. And the rim is a little smaller than the the original Swiss, but the extractors on the Schmidts work just fine with them.
In the long run - I'd get a box or two of Norma ammo or brass . Yes, it is overpriced - (shouldn't be much more than you paid for your rifle) but you'll only buy it once and it will be the right thing for your rifle.
Best...........!0 -
there are ads in shotgun news selling cases of 7.5x55 swiss for between $130.00 and $148.00. hornady just reintroduced 7.5x55 swiss in its frontier lineup. try giving them a call. i to have some norma brass, and it is the best you can get but pricey.do not experiment with these older guns. the schmidt rubin family of guns are overbuilt mauser strong pieces, but why take the risk. the brass will not last long when made like that.

Don't do it. The case is 4mm too short, the head is too small, and the case will bulge badly, if not fail. Your options are:
Swiss RUAG boxer primed brass
NORMA
INDEP of Portugal
7.5 Hornady
.284 Winchester
and if you are really a glutton for punishment, you can turn the rim off of 7.62X54R, cut a new extractor groove, and resize successfully.
Plenty of options!

Don't even think about it.
As jonk noted, there are multiple sources of the correct brass. Not cheap, perhaps, but that's the risk one assumes in buying some of these less common military surplus rifles. Usually (not always) if the ammo is readily available, the price of the rifle will reflect that situation - and the converse. If you keep your eyes open, you can probably scrounge some. I had a friend for whom I would scrounge Norma brass and ammo. Every so often, I'd see it covered w/ dust on a back shelf w/ an old price and the shop owners were very happy to move it - after two years of looking, he had roughly 200 cases to play with and not much money invested in them.0 -
I have been buying Portuguese FOM 7.5 Swiss ammo at gun show for about $13 for 20 rounds. It is new manufacture and is boxer primed. I shoot it and reload to brass. It is cheaper than buying Norma brass. I wish they would just offer the brass. 0
