243/6mm rifle?
I am in the market for a 6mm Rem. or 243 Win. rifle and have been looking on the used markets. I enjoy working on older rifles but would like a model with a good reputation to start. I have mainly been interested in Rem. model 788's and Ruger 77V's. The 788's usually have a carbine(18.5"-22") length and sporter weight barrel, the 77V has a 24" heavy barrel. I like the heavier, longer barrel but have heard very iffy reports about the rugers. This is going to be a all-around gun for varmint/predator and maybe light deer hunting. If I got a 788 and had to have it rebarreled what type of cost am I looking at from a gunsmith?
Anyone's opinion would be great!

Would an older Rem. 700 ADL, in .243, be of any interest. $387.99 Delivered to your FFL. GW. 0 -
would definitly suggest not rebarrelling a 788, just go buy a older 700 243 or 6mm, i have a 6mm 700 with a 22 barrel and it shoots like housefire, just my two cents/

Get yourself a 700 Remington andbe done with it!! Either caliber you choose!! The rebarrelling with a quality barrel and a super smithing job will cost you 500.00. You can get it done cheaper but not with a quality barrel and not with a whole lot of of thought!! Wal-Mart changes oil but do they look for transmission seal leaks or other problems? They change oil! I can rebarrel the 788 or the 77 for that matter in the farm shop! If you want quality get the right components and then have a competent person put them together!!! GHD 0 -

Just buy a remington model 700 and be done, You will be happy you did.
