45acp ammunition.
I recently purchased a 1911 style 45, I have always shot 230 grain ball ammo in 45's but am interested in switching over to a hollow point self defense load in the 185 to 200 grain area, any reccomendations.

Our local Sheriffs Dept uses Federal Tacitcal (not hydroshock), the city dept uses Federal Hydroshock, and the state uses CCI HP ammo, and I think that one of the county's next to us uses Winchester SXT or Ranger (not sure which). They all swear by them.
In my personal opinion, unless your gun has a feed ramp or just shoot HP ammo exceptionally well, I'd still with FMJ. But thats just me.
If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.

The Winchester SXT is coned shaped like the old ball ammo.If you have a 1911A1 that dont like Hollow points usually the Winchester SXT is a good fix.I would choose it or Remington Green box Hollow points.
Best!!

I remember reading astory in guns and ammo mag tha the govt. was carring springfield armory 1911 style pistols, And they did a shoot out test os various factory ammo, They only had two bullets that passed there ridgid tests 0f over 10,000 rounds for each style bullet. One of the bullets was factory remington golden sabre ammo. The other if I recall correctly was wade by whinchester, But not sure which exact bullet offering.
I only read this, This is not my recommended choices. You shoud try some of these and see how they work though, Befor using for actual home defence purpuse's.
My 2 cents worth

What about the Glaser Safety bullets? Any comments? I was thinking about buying a box in .40S&W, and .45ACP.

I have a few calibers in Glaser, and they always have worked in my guns. They are expensive though. hotrodusa is right, get some different makes and try them and see which one works best and then stay with it.

Glasers are to expensive for practical daily shootig, but ideal for frangible application ammo.

look at cor-bon for any type of ammo you will carry

Try Cor-Bon PowerBall 165 gr. It's a hollowpoint with a polymer that fills the cavity and allows for more reliable feeding, like ball ammo. It also packs more energy if you're an energy freak. 0 -
the other one, the gentelman above was talking about was the winchester 230 gr HP SXT. stay with a heavy HP more knock down power i.e. the SXT. 0 -
As others have said, go buy several boxes of different types of .45 Ammo. Find one that is accurate and reliable, then test with more of the same load to assure reliability. Good luck.

I'm a huge fan of a 185 grn remington JHP infront of 8.2 grns of Unique.

A heavier bullet will give you better pentration, but the .45acp already carries such a heavy bullet, I'm sure a 165 or 185gr bullet would carry its energy just fine.
I'd say just go buy one box of every different kind of 45 ammo you can find, go out shoot it all and see which one you like best.

Just thought I'd throw this in, we watched a video in class (sheriffs acadamy) on ballistics, myths and reality kinda deal, and they fired a +P 115gr FMJ 9mm and a standard subsonic 230gr .45acp FMJ ammo, and the .45acp penetrated a considerably lot more ballistic jellitian than the 9mm. They said it was because of the weight of the bullet effects its momentum, and even though the 9mm had more energy before it hit the jello, the 230gr bullet had more energy after a few inches of penetration.
If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.

I tried Cor-Bon awhile back and, as just about everyone on this forum knows, was really disatisfied with it. I bought a box of twenty, and two of the rounds wouldn't feed. In fact, they jammed in a vertical position between the slide and the locking block. It took two hands and about five seconds to clear the jam- not something I'd like to spend my time doing in a life-or-death situation.
Whatever kind of ammo you choose, TRY IT. Greater advice could not be given when it comes to self-defense ammo.
