Very accurate out to 200m. Recoil is not too bad.

In general, barrel length changes velocity of bullets by about 50fps per inch change in barrel length. thus, a bullet from a 22 inch barrel will be traveling about 100fps faster than from a 20 inch barrel and about 200 fps slower than a bullet from a 24 inch barrel. It will not make much difference to a deer or elk at 200 yards.

recoil is dependant upon bullet wieght and powder charge. a .30-06 88 grain accelerator load has little or no recoil. a 250 grain barnes solid will hit like a freight train. under 180 grain bullet wieght and powered by moderate powder loads the .30-06 is an easy to shoot middle of the road recoiling rifle.

the set, drop and comb of the stock also are a factor in recoil. a straight stocked rifle with a metal buttplate will hurt more than an angled stock with a recoil pad/deccellerator on the butt.

most new/good centerfire rifles in .30-06 are capable of holding 3 shots in 3 inches at 200 yds.

    just some random thoughts.

    All,

Thanks for the info. Can you explain set, drop and comb of the stock.

Stock drop dimensions refer to the measurement of the cheekpiece below the bore line of the rifle. More drop means the top of the stock is lower in regard to the barrel or sights. Usually, a lower cheekpiece is better for open sight use and a higher (less drop) for scope use.

recoil energy for some popular calibers is as follows.
    30-06 =23.1 ft lbs
300 win mag =30.2 ft lbs
    300 wsm =28.5 ft lbs
338 win mag =35.0 ft lbs
7mm rem mag =20.5 ft lbs
    270 win =19.0 ft lbs
    243 win =13.5 ft lbs
    22-250 =6.2 ft lbs
This is for a standard weight sporter barrel.
I've seen 30-06 rifles with 18 inch barrels shoot very accurate, With some fine tunning with trying different ammo you should be able to make that 22 inch barreled rifle you talk about shoot very accurate at 200 yards. 30-06 likes 165 grain bullets.
