S&W Sigma Opinions

I have fired a couple different examples of the Sigma series in 9mm and .40. I was not really impressed with either. Two of friends that owned them ended up selling them as they were neither real accurate or totally reliable.

One other buddy has a .40 and is really pleased with it. I think I'd look for something else if it was me....

I have had a 40 S&W since high capacity magazines were legal. It looks ugly, but it have never malfunctioned. I saw a test in Shotgun News several months ago that was run on several different service pistols, and it came out as one of the more reliable ones. Once you get use to the trigger, I have found it to be as accurate as my Glock 22.

I have found them to be reliable, safe and good shooters at a good price.I now own two a SW40V and a SW40VE.I would recommend them to anyone familiar with a Semi-Auto Double action only.

Thanks for the info. Does a model with a hi cap mag also handle the standard mags?

Sigmas have supporters and detractors. They are always compared to Glocks, and that is a tough act to follow, although I have never heard of a Sigma blowing up, something which cannot be said about Glocks. I think they have the best-feeling grip of about any pistol ever. I love the way they point. My first-year .40 is totally reliable. Pre-ban high capacity magazines will fit current guns. Current Sigmas are much imporved over early guns. If you can accept a pistol with no active safety, consider the Sigma.

I guess they are compared to a Glock. S&W lost the patent infringement suit and has to pay a royalty to Glock. Although the current Sigma is a much improved model, I just don't care for a gun that was originally designed by the Accounting Dept.

From what I hear, the new one's are pretty nice. I heard that after you dry fire it about 500 times, the trigger pull eases up a little, gets broken in, and feels alot better to shoot. I haven't fired one myself, but have had a buddy shoot his next to me on the line at the range. It never malfunctioned, and he maintained about the same size groups as I did with my glock.

Don't hold me to it, but if memory serves, they were selling them at acadamy sporting goods for $279.99. At that price I'd say one could afford to give it a try.

If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.

I owned one of the first S&W Sigmas in a compact 40. It was awful! It jammed many times. I returned it to Smith and told them I was a police officer.

They claimed to have repaired it, sent it back to me, still no good.
I couldn't even sell it. Had to trade it in. Never again! (Keep in mind that this was when they first came out). I cannot speak for current ones.

I sold five of the early 9mm guns back when they first hit the market in late 1994? Most folks came in looking for Glocks but bought the Sigma because I had it discounted- Glocks were walking out the door so why cut their price? I kept one of the Sigmas for myself to use as a law enforcement demo. I never could raise any interest with it. The Sigma was very comfortable and pointed well, but the trigger was awful! I never could overcome that and I'm not a fan of Glocks for the same reason. Interestingly of the four Sigmas I retailed, two were traded back to me for Glocks- I love that! One regular customer kept his Sigma and continues to praise it and says he'll never get rid of it. I disposed of my demo Sigma long ago but feel it is still a fine pistol if you can adjust to the trigger.

I bought a 40 Sigma several years ago. I have run a least 500 rounds through it and never a malfuction. People that aren't used to double action will not like the trigger pull. However the Sigma is great for me. I bought the gun used, and am very happy with it. I would buy more but I can only carry one at a time.
The 15 round mags that were given to me are excatly the same as the ten round mags that came with it. I remarked to the D.A. armorer that the only differance was a dimple, on the side, at ten rounds. He told me that I could easily press that out and have a couple more 15 round mags.
I guess I should get that in writing, from the D.A. before I alter the mags.
