NY Laws on Pellet Guns

Can a Pellet Pistol be sold directly to an individual in NY State, or must it go through an FFL? Here in NJ, a BB Gun is considered a firearm and must be transfered via NICS.

  I used to live in NYC. You could buy an air gun in Long Island but not in the city, ...something I learned after purchasing one.
