    Neal,

I finally got around to taking two M1's to the range to try your suggestion of swapping parts to determine why one was not cocking after some rounds.

I can tell you we believe we found the problem. It is the lower stock.
It turns out that it is commerical and not GI. It was not cut out correctly, and after the first shot seems to be binding somewhere. We swapped the trigger group to the other rifle and it worked fine, then we swapped the gas cylinder and finally the stock.

Thank you for your imput once again. You are always a great help to those of us who are Garand challenged. [;)]

Charlie, it sounds like both problems are caused by the hammer following the bolt forward when the action cycles. Be sure that there is no lubricant on the hammer hooks or the hammer engaging surfaces of the trigger. If that's not it, borrow a trigger group and swap it to be sure that the problem is in the trigger group; if so, replace the hammer and trigger. Detailed trigger group disassembly instructions can be found on www.memorableplaces.com, courtesy of "Charles".

If that's still not it, your friend needs to visit his armorer, because it could be a problem with the bolt or receiver.

I am assuming that this is a USGI M1; if it is made by CAI, disregard the above suggestions and tell your friend to cut the receiver in half.

    Neal,

Sorry, yes it is a USGI (Springfield) M1. I will try your suggestions and get back to you.

Thank you for your help and quick response.
