HK G3(or clone) or L1A1(or clone)?
I am interested in purchasing a G3 or L1A1 type rifle, but am not sure which to get. Which do you recommend and why? Thanks for any feedback.

Thanks for the input. Another question I forgot to bring up. What does the knob on the front of the barrel of the FAL do? I heard it had to do with gas pressure/recoil. Also, what is the difference between the FAL sporter and the battle rifles? 0 -
Like SaxonPig, I've owned both of the original rifles. Personally I like the HK better, seems to fit me better and I like the sights better ... as to being louder, I can't say I've noticed any difference ... I do wear earplugs ... but there is no megaphone on the end of the HK or anything like that, maybe there is a difference because the HK is a "delayed blow-back" and the L1A1 uses a gas system?
That's another point for the HK, there is no gas system to clean, it has a lot less parts; therefore, easier to maintain ... both are reliable battle proven designs. I'd say try them both and whichever one feels best is the one to buy first!
I've assembled several of the HK Clones (but never bought one "pre-made") If your considering an HK clone or a Cetme, some of the things I've heard to watch for are the sights are sometimes cocked to one side, mag fit may need to be adjusted, difficulty chambering a round due to improper op-rod tube installation. Since I don't care for the L1A1 I can't offer any words of caution on them.

Thanks for info on what to watch out for. I've seen the sights on the HK and they are quite different to me. I'm used to the peep sights like what you'd see on an M-16A2 or M249. How do the sights on an HK work, what does rotating them do? Also, I was told the HK has a lot more kick than the FAL, has this been your experience? On the FAL, what exactly does changing the gas pressure do? I'm just full of questions, aren't I? 0 -
WW - To be honest, I dont remember what the kick was like with the Fal, but it seems like I remember and have heard it's more mild, probably due partly to the gas system ... another thing that could also contribute is the butt plate, the HK is hard plastic unless you get one of the higher-end stocks ... 0r there is a rubber pad simular to the size of the PSG-1 (longer and wider) which spreads the recoil over greater area (of course being rubber helps too) it was designed for the HK21E machine gun, but fits the standard stock. There are also several different butt pads avaiable for the FAL, and I believe they are $15-$30, where as the HK pad is $50 or more.
The standard sight drum is adjustable for elevation and windage, it rotates to 4 stations adjust for targets out to 400 meters, there is another less common drum sight that isn't adjustable for elevation for targets at 200, 400, 500 & 600 meters, then the 1200 meter sight which is fairly easy to find but in the $200+ price range.
