Keep saving, class 3 weapons get real expensive.
Hope your not in a commie-state like Cali, New York, etc...
Don't worry about the bullet with your name on it, worry about the fragmentation grenade addressed 'To Occupant'.0 -
For the money you are going to spend, Stay with springfield. I am not saying the others are bad, I think they are very well built. I have had my Std. Model for about 19 years, & it's been flawless.
(oops) thought you may have meant (M1A)
Just my thoughts

I agree with FrancF. Actually, Springfield Inc. is the only company producing them on a regular basis, and has them available from stocking dealers. If you have a local non-stocking dealer, Hoplite, Inc (502-955-5014) has them from $1,150.
A word about nomenclature. The M14 is a full-auto rifle made for the US armed forces; you don't want one of these ($5K & up). You want a "M14 clone"; it is similar to the M14, but cannot be made to fire full-auto. "M1A" is Springfield Inc's trademark for their M14 clone.
Avoid Polytech, Norinco, and Armscorp, unless you find a receiver to which all USGI parts have been assembled by an experienced armorer. Avoid Federal Ordnance altogether.

You probably won't find an M14 for sale anywhere at a price you can or are willing to pay. The only ones out there are amnesty registered rifles which "somehow" found ther way out of Uncle Sam's inventory and into someones hot little hands. At the time these rifles had to be registered (December, 1968)the M14 was still the issue rifle for our troops stationed within the NATO alliance and not many were "liberated". The Army did realese a few M14 match rifles during the early 1960's, but these are so rare that they command even higher prices than the standard rifles. I have never actually seen one, but they do exist in private hands. Although restricted to semi automatic fire they are still machineguns. There are also some re-welded M14 rifles out there- receivers sold as scrap and the re-militarized into complete rifles. You are on your own here!
I agree with nmyers warnings about the manufactures to avoid. Fed Ord recievers are notorious for poor quality control. Many the gunsmith has given up in frustration trying to get one of their completed rifles to function or properly mount GI componets to a Fed Ord stipped receiver. I stopped selling them a long time before any bans.
Some of the earliest Polytech rifles were very nice but the later guns and all of the Norico's that I've seen are a nightmare of mixed parts and other components. Most will not accept G.I. parts and finding Chineese parts in damn near impossible. These rifles seem to wear very quickly and always need some type of adjustment. Buy any of these rifles and you'll become very good friends with a gunsmith.
I own an early Springfield Armory NM M1A rifle and cannot fault it in any way. I have never heard anyone critical of this manufactures M1A rifles. M-K Specialties (304-265-3675) of West Virginia was supposed to have begun production of a near identical copy of the M14 reciever, save the full auto capability. I looked at these at the SHOT show and was VERY impressed with their products. They even use the military center-takedown for the operating rod, just like in the real M14. Springfields take down like M1 Garands. At the time of the SHOT show production of receivers was underway with complete rifles palnned for release in the spring. Pricing appeared to be higher than Springfield's but S-K claims a superior product. You'll have to judge that for yourself.

I just got one about 2 weeks back, it's my 3ed one that I have. It's a Springfield, National Match, stainless steel barrel, and the black stock. AND!!!!!!!!!! It comes with a coupon, You send them $130.00 and you get a Government model scope, It has the "rangefinding Reticle" and the bullet drop compensation, with a bubble level. And you get the 3ed Gen. Scope mount too. WHAT A DEAL! Check them out at Springfieldarmory.com You can get this for about $1400.00 not from them, But you should find a dealer that will sell under the list price. All the M1A's come with a Lifetime Warranty.
It will hurt you, More than it will hurt me..0 -
If you want a deal on a M1A try to locate the Hi-power competitor's in your area ask around if any one is selling their M1A's last few years has seen a massive change to the AR-15 for competion Many of these competitors still have M1A's that have been tuned modified etc. You can get a great deal as many have been shot alot and don't owe them anything plus you could probably get their favorite load data too! Good Luck 0 -

I have a norinco---"I think", M1A that I had a Match Barrel and
TRW bolt put on . It was getting about 1 1/2 to 1 1/4 inch groups
at 100 yds. I thought this was very poor so I got a match springfield and a super match, and it turns out the springfield performed exactly the same, and the super match had to be returned for problems.
I may be willing to unload the Norinco in a couple of months once I figure which one I will keep. The Springfield is wanted by a friend
but he hasn't called in a while.
Let me know if interested. All are in beautiful condition.

I am always looking for ChiCom M14 rifles and I occasionally have parts.
They almost never have the wear problems noted above.
I have 4 right now and have owned many more.
I do check the headspace every 250-300 rds, have had only one bolt loosen up.
I do replace the trigger parts and sights with Garand parts.
